Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Any thoughts?

Postby Turd Ferguson on Mon Feb 21, 2011 9:05 pm

I just finished Amnesia: The Dark Descent and I personally thought it was a fantastic game (I know its been out for a while, I'm late to the party). The atmosphere was truly creepy and the game featured unique puzzles and gameplay mechanics. It took roughly 7 hours to complete the game on my first play through, and I think I'm about to start again. My question is for those of you who have played it, what are your thoughts on the game. Also, I'm a little surprised that this hasn't been brought up, but the level editor included with the game is incredibly simple to use compared to Source and you can make bone-chilling levels in a short period of time. Has anyone in the forum tried the editor out? I've been messing with it. While I don't have anything noteworthy yet, I think its a great editor. I'd like to see creations from you guys If you've tried it out!

I haven't got very far in the game yet, but I do like it.

However I didn't know there was an editor that came with the game, does it come with the steam version? I'd be quite keen to try it.

Have you completed the previous games? Penumbra I think is the name..

I actually got really bored of it, really quickly. I'll probably go back to it at some point, but even with all the lights out and noise cancelling headphones on, I just wasn't getting immersed what-so-ever.

Yes, I completed the Penumbra series shortly before beginning Amnesia. The games were good, especially black plague, but they weren't nearly as scary as Amnesia. And yes, the editor is found within the amnesia folder. However, it requires making some small text files and editing some to make your levels playable. Also, a lot of the game was made using coding, so a coder would be needed to create complex levels. ( a fully playable level can be made without any coding experience, don't worry) Otherwise, you shouldnt have any problems with it. http://wiki.frictionalgames.com/hpl2/start#hpl2_documentation This link will get you set up.

This is not a first person shooter, which is why some people may be disappointed with it, but if you give it time, the game is excellent, even though it has a bit of a slow start.

Yeh one of the best games I´ve played in years, something I´ve actually wanted to play thru. =P Its not the horror for me, but the feel of an classic adventure, and the atmosphere, all that stuff. I had a gameplay-breaking bug, the stupid acid cup, but after checking the Frictional Games´ forums, I found a fix for that.

Havent tried the level editor, and no idea how flexible it is, or if you can just make similar levels to Amnesia.

Theres a model editor in the files and I also believe theres a texture editor included but Im not positive on that one, but with some custom models you could create a totally different style, but It would take A LOT of custom content.

LOL im not a bot :)

And btw: i played much further, and if you play it long enough/frequently, you completely lose the fear of the monsters, because youll notice theyre all scripted and will disappear if youre out of range.
