For the tryout you could technically use something else besides DODS because obviously I would buy the $5 game for the mapper who wins this project.

The main thing is, even if you (you as in anyone reading this) are a great mapper, this job isnt just about making a good map but about authenticity to looking realistic. I have a certain "vision" in my head about the map. What I am looking for is a mapper who seems to have the most similar "vision" of it as well as seen through their tryout map even if they happen to not have the most eye catching entry. I will try to give you guys a very EXHAUSTED analysis of the terrain, building type, conditions and overall feel to the tryout map as much as possible. But for the actual request, I cannot go into that great of depth on every facet of the map, because for the most part, I am hoping that you will just have that natural understanding of how the map should take shape because the tryout map will be under the same conditions as what the actual map request will entail. So from your tryout map I will be able to ascertain if you seem to "get it".

Would you provide us with concept art and real life photo references?

Yessir, I will have pictures everywhere and I will have the preferred layout of the building and lot in front (which isnt restrictive, if you have a different vision of how it should look go for it!). Ill forgo concept art, you guys dont want to see my drawing ability haha. Trust me, it will be enough to have any mapper here know how green the vegetation should be, what the lighting could be like, the type of materials to use, etc. It will honestly probably be about a 10 minute read on your end because I want the field to be set without complications. What you guys make from there and the tiny little authentic additions you guys add are what I am looking for. You will need to know how to make decals and textures, and thats not just to wow me. As for Models....you "may" be able to have to avoid making them. But then again, someone who does have their own models in their tryout map and they fit the surroundings of the tryout map instructions/terrain/location...that will naturally catch my eye.

Sorry my two cents, this is the dumbest project I've heard in awhile and no wonder nobody is replying on MapsCore about it... :smt039 Good luck to everyone else wasting their time on this! :smt023

Please add me on Steam via link below, and we can talk about this better in-chat. If you'd rather not talk "text-to-text", then I shall have nothing but wishing you good luck with someone else. I find it much easyier to do it this way, then just replying on the forum back to back.

Ill talk to you Gamershaze but please understand that the tryout will be used to determine who I pick. And yes, if picked we will spend a lot of time together talking and weekly updates to talk about progress and suggestions. And also understand I will not disclose information that can give you a head start on other mappers out there who are looking to tryout too. Im testing speed as well because this map does have a time frame for completion. Im just saying this because someone lse wanted to talk to me and I pent 15 minutes looking at pictures over the internet of their portfolio. Like I said, Im sure all the entries in this tryout will be from great level designers, Im not looking for the one with the most skill, Im looking for the one who just naturally makes something that best fits in with how I foresee the map should look like. All the portfolios in the world cant let me know if the mapper will have a similar vision in their head as I do on how the map should look.

And Knight, some people just arent gifted with level designing. That would be me. My last project didnt get any replies at mapcorps either but I still got my mapper from there. I dont see what the big deal is? OMG someone paying for a map!?! So what, its my money and Id like to do something for my clan. Ive paid for maps before and they turned out great. But I have also paid for a few other maps and the problem was is that the mapper I hired for it didnt fully comprehend what is was I was wanting them to go for in the map. It lead to a map I was not fully proud of and it was wasted money. It wasnt his skills that made the map not shine for me but that he took a different direction then how I envisioned it, even with tons of pictures and images to go by. And thats what I am using this tryout for, to ensure I find a mapper who shares that similar vision with me so I do not have to worry about this happening for this map.

I tend to agree with Switz.

I don't see anything "dumb" about this. Hell, I'm even tempted to try, even if I just get second or third place in the tryouts; I get a free game.

Yeah it does suck at the same time for me though, because I know in about 1.5 weeks I will be hurting a few peoples feelings when I do not choose them over someone else. And I like mappers. Always have. In the modding world they are always some of the most laid back team members on a developer team you can talk to. If I had to take a guess right now and guess how many I think will tryout based on interest level, I would say 4-5 so far. So I guess go about this like you would a small map challenge. Except if you win you in turn start work on a quick job and gain a little cash for your effort.

And someone else asked this. I will not wire money. It costs a lot to wire. Especially to other countries (+$40). I will only do paypal or buy stuff for you on steam as reimbursement if you want games or something. With paypal I will cover all fees to so you would get the full payment.

A reminder (and a selfish 'bump'),

The request will be going up in 24 hours and tryouts may begin. Tryouts end on October 8th. I am releasing it a day early because I have to go to work (12 hour shift) plus itll give you guys more of the weekend to work on it instead of hurting yourselves over the weekday to get time in on it instead of doing something else you would rather be doing.

Again, the actual tryout portion to be hired for this project is not overly much. All it will be is a small area (20 square yards probably, but depends on how you envision it). It will involve one building (inside will not have much going on either) and a little environment around it so I can get a picture of your style and how the map would look like if I hire you for this job. For individuals like yourselves this is not much of a challenge for you except that others will more than likely be trying to do the same thing as you.

Another thing, DO NOT FREAK OUT WHEN YOU SEE THE REQUEST. Im going to go ahead and tell you guys what I wrote up as yalls "instructions" is extremely thorough and loaded with images, videos and example images of the look I am going for. So in laments terms...its HUGE! BUT, As for the amount of stuff you would have to do when making this map, it would probably come out to being only a fraction of what you would have to do for a normal map. I just have a habit of rambling and overly explaining details. If you start reading through my instructions youll see that it really isnt all that much. The main thing you would most likely be focusing on is texturing over brush work. But I do have some things that will test your brushwork and I think that you guys will enjoy making them alot actually.

And remember, I will be rewarding who I feel would be my 2nd and 3rd pick out of the entries. The 2nd place designer will get a $50 game purchased for them via steam and the 3rd place mapper will get a $20 game. The mapper I pick will get their first $50 payment at weeks end (after one week of work on the project), then $75 after the first month and when the job is complete in 1.5-2 months (whenever you finish or look like your about to wrap things up). P.S., I will only do Paypal. If I have to wire it comes out of the $200. If for some reason I do not find what I am looking for I will still do the game rewards to the top 2 but not hire a mapper. But judging from the looks of this crowd and my quick stalking of the profiles of the people who seemed interested, I am very sure that damn near all of you guys will nail this tryout and make my choice even more difficult to make.

And that leads me to another thing, Im going to go ahead and say this (because I know I will piss people off if I do not choose them), I am not a mapper. Well I am, but not nearly good enough t call myself one. So Im not a hammer guru. You very well could had displayed the most skill in your tryout and I am too much of a rookie to have noticed it. Trust me when I say that I am sorry if you do not make it in my top 3. I HATE seeing people work for me and not get compensated for it. I just hope that you are a good sport about it and who knows, I can think of many other people who need maps, though I dont know if any would pay though but at least I could help you by spreading your name around to try and get clients.

And that is about it. Again, please do not freak out when you see this enormous request page tomorrow. Just read through some of it and youll start seeing the flow of the request and that all in all it really isnt that huge or complicated of a map request. But keep in mind, I am expecting a deadline of 2 months on this map. Like I said in my initial post, "If you cannot deliver, do not step up to the plate." But I can handle unexpected events that may force you to have to take some time away from working on the project. As long as your honest with me and up front I can work with you and help you out.

This seems overly complicated, and I'm not interested, so I don't really care. But why don't you pick someone based on their portfolio?

You cant judge someones speed, understanding of how you want the map to look like or if they would be a easy person to work with by their portfolio alone. Plus, with a tryout, proves right there they are not potentially lazy. Not saying everyone who is somewhat interested but doesnt try out is lazy, but you have to admit, from a buyers standpoint it helps settle that worry a bit.

Plus I did that route with my prior maps. And yes, all of them turned out great. But this map is very special to me. I want to make sure it is done right.

$200 Map Request Tryout

The tryout ends on October 8th at 1800EST (6PM). All entries must be made by then (do not be afraid to send incomplete entries).
To make your entry, you can either reply here, send me a PM, or show me via steam (my steam contact is at the bottom). If posting your entry, please state your steam ID or URL along with some screenshots and a BSP of your tryout map. Again, if you dont want to provide these for public view please PM me the parts you do not want the public to see.

The mapper I choose will be hired for this job and a total of $200 will be paid from three installments (dates are explained on the map request link). The mapper who I feel is the runner up will receive a $50 steam game purchase on Oct. 8th. And the mapper who would be my 3rd pick will receive a $20 game on Oct. 8th. For everyone else I am very sorry. Believe me, I know how much work it takes to work on maps and I hate it that for a few of you this may indeed be a waste of time. No hard feelings please. Who knows, you may have a style that I think can work for something else I may plan up in the future.

Also, after the tryout ends I will put together a sort of community vote to allow the community to vote for fun on who they would had chose if they where in my shoes. Im sorry but I cannot offer a prize for winning this because that may lead to vote tampering. Please state in your entry if you would like your entry to be voted on in the community vote for fun.

And here it is, the actual map request

Game: Day of Defeat Source (you can do the tryout map in any game you wish, if you are picked I will buy DODS for you)
Map Name: MCRD Parris Island (Marine Corps Recruit Depot)
Map Location: Beufort, South Carolina USA
Type of Map: Realistic training base
Maps Time Frame: 1940-1945 style/look (if your unsure if something looks too newish...go older looking)
Weather: See vast amt of images in request. Sunny and cloudless
Skybox: Marsh or Forest
Terrain: Flat!!! (but for optimizing purposes you can do what you need to help you)
Vegetation: Sand/Grass blend, Shrubs, Oaks, Moss, Palm Trees (not growing wild though)

Go To the Request page:
http://3rdMarines.org/Parris_Island_Request/Parris_Island_Request.html

The first thing you will probably do is start scrolling through it...and scrolling...and scrolling....and then say to yourself "HolyS**T! F This". Trust me, just start reading through some of it and youll see that its actually MUCH less than what the request makes it look like. Each area is completely described and contains images and videos. I over explain things. Its what I do. But for $200 and this "Tryout" you'll guess that I really want this map to be perfect. It is special to me because I used to be a Marine. My clan is technically a "Realism Unit" but as realistic as we can get in terms of what we teach our guys, how we run our recruit training (reason why this map needs to have everything perfect) and even how we talk in game. We are naturally a very tiny clan. But the guys in it are indeed respected by me for their eagerness and will to learn about my beloved corps. It is my way of helping spread awareness for the USMC.

The request page covers everything I am looking for and outlines the Tryout Map portion. Be sure to check the very bottom of the page for helpful downloads such as pre-made decals and files if youd rather not make them yourself. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me through steam or here. If you want to add update images to your map for me to give my opinion on go for it. If you want to take a risk and lean a little away from the request to create something you think could work go for it. I know this request sounds like Im VERY picky but Im not. Im in full favor of seeing you be creative and make Parris Island how you would think it would look like in 1940-1945. As long as you add the key features I listed int he table of contents you can go from there completely.

***Good luck to everyone who tries. And thank you so much for even trying in the first place. I know the money is fueling your efforts but I hope that if you happen to get picked that you enjoy making this map (youll probably love the Crucible portion) and the payments become just an added bonus.***

Just Three Days Left!

Thats right guys, only three days left to get your tryout portion completed and submitted. So far I only have seen ONE person attempting this project. That doesnt mean their arent others, but its a safe bet that the number of people trying is very low.

Odds are a lot of you who where going to do this but decided not to just scrolled through the very long typed out reqeust above. Im telling you guys, as far as making this map is concerned, you would have a much harder and longer time mapping a random "standard" map. Read through the request, over half the section in this request are already done for you! All youll mainly be working on is Section A because that is the only area of the map there is no current work completed for it. And better yet, the tryout part is actually a part of the map request. You guys spend more time making maps for free to help others than what it would take to make an entry for a chance to win a great game or be hired for a $200 project. I hope most of you guys just havent publicly announced your trying out because I would hate to see someone miss this chance if it is something they really want to do. Either way, good luck and THANK YOU to the few who do tryout.
