Dark Souls coming to PC this August

Postby nub on Wed Apr 11, 2012 8:31 pm

Dark Souls is getting a new edition release called the "Prepare to die" edition. This new edition will feature an entirely new area for exploration. More importantly, however, the game will also be coming to PC.

Anyone else here ever play Dark Souls? It's a great game, but extremely unforgiving and punishing. The PVP is plagued by latency-related issues, but you can essentially avoid PVP for the most part. I'm hoping the online will actually function properly on the PC and allow you to summon people to help you out with boss fights.

The only thing I'm afraid of is performance. Certain areas of the game lagged like crazy (Blighttown especially) on both console versions. Hopefully they've done some much needed optimization to the game for this new edition. I think the main problem was the insane draw distances in certain areas and the lack of LODs for models.

I've always wanted to play Dark Souls but I don't own any of the modern consoles. I'll definitely buy this if its a good port.

Edit: Ahhhh its using GFWL. ABANDON SHIP. EVERYTHING IS RUINED FOREVER. CHRISTMAS IS CANCELLED.

I don't see any issues with GFWL DRM (Other then its provided by Microsoft), at least you don't have to load an external application to run the game, and the overlay is not as intrusive as you get with Steam, or Origin.

Actually many games require the GFWL client to run. And there's been constant problems with loosing save data and region restrictions. Nobody likes to purchase games from it so its where publishers send PC games to die.

Ahem, I lost over 60-100 hours after I %100 completed Arkham City, all the riddler trophies, all the campaigns, everything. And now all of that is lost simply because I changed my Windows LIVE name.

I can't handle this...

I honestly can't stand GFWL at all. It's completely shitty in every aspect. I don't even understand how Microsoft is capable of producing a piece of software as bad as GFWL is. It took me half an hour to get my copy of Arkham City registered to my Live account because of one bull shit thing after another.

I think Fable 3, aside from being a generally shitty game, is the best example of Windows Live sucking ass. It runs the 3rd party client in the background, which eats up a considerable amount of processing power; more than Steam believe it or not. On top of that, every time I'd exit Fable 3, the client would still run in the background. Whenever I'd exit the client, it would take a good 5 minutes just to fully close down at times, all while making Windows Explorer lag total ass. With games like Arkham city or Fallout NV, it doesn't run the client in the background, it just integrates it in the game like the Steam Overlay. That's tolerable after you get past the activation bull shit.

There's actually a petition to have them remove GFWL before the game launches. Honestly, I can deal with it if it stays. But it would seriously be better overall for the game to NOT have it. GFWL does nothing but bog games down. People like to install a game then jump in and start playing right away. But when you have to sit through the shitty Windows Live interface and register the CD key, then wait for Live to download your profile for the umpteenth time, then for it to stop and say you need to update Live for the umpteenth time; it kind of fucks with users. It's just...a big giant headache every single time.

They'd do so much better to instead use the Steam API for this game. I wouldn't be surprised if it comes to Steam, considering Bandai Namco helped publish The Witcher 2, which is on Steam.

The game that came with steam pre order for DX:E (or was it BioShock 2?) used a GFWL DRM alongside Steam - this is the only experience i have had with GFWL - so maybe my experience is not worthy of saying overall 'there is no problem'.

It's honestly not THAT big of a deal to me. It's only truly annoying with games owned by Microsoft (i.e. Fable 3). Once the activation process is over, it usually isn't much of a hassle afterward.

Still. Steam API > GFWL.

Try creating an offline account with your old name. When I created a LIVE account for Section 8 it "got rid" of my offline account and instead insists on auto-logging me into an account with no save games on it but creating an offline account with the same name brought back my saves and allowed me to log in normally though i still need to log out of the wrong account every time.
