New computer - Need to get my fact straight about the hardwa

Postby The Ace on Mon Dec 17, 2007 5:42 pm

Alright, I got a new computer for birthday, and I need some help figuring out how good it actually is (we might return it for some other, so this is rather important).

CPU: C2Q Q6600 775 - (All this tells me is that it's quad-core)
RAM: 2x 1024MB DDR2
GPU: VGA NV 8600GS 512M HDMI - (I'm totally clueless here)
HDD: 500GB SATA

Also, Vista Premium (this bothers me, as I have heard that Vista and XP are not compatible when it comes to LAN, and I have a printer & file share network set up at home)...

I mainly use my computer for gaming, but I don't demand to reach the absolute top-notches of game settings.

I have spent alot of time Googling but I don't seem to find what I'm looking for.
Mind lending me a hand? :)

You've got an Ace computer there, top notch stuff. Only downside would be the graphics card which you may be able to sell and get an 8800 instead. But really that isn't that bad, thats awesome.

Vista is absolutely a dream for networking. Much easier and better than XP. I have a media server running XP and a laptop on XP and they get along just fine.

Your system is good with the exception of your video card sucking. If it's at all possible to get an 8800GT I would do so. Otherwise it's a very good system.

Oh, btw, ONLY 500? Goodness. The only reason I bothered with a 250GB HDD is I wanted a 16mb cache. I think I have like 100GB free

How is this possible? It took me a year to fill just a 150 gigabytes on my hard drive. And 20 were taken before I even got to it.

Edit: Oh, and Ace, that's a very nice computer. You might want a gig or two more of ram, but it's not really necessary. Neither is an 8800 if you don't care about maxed out settings. An 8600 will get you through most current games with no problems.

I too have 750 GB and I know it will be years before that will fill up and even then I will never let it go above say 100 + GB.

Everything goes on my external HD (300 GB) to make sure the PC runs at its best. Lovely devices external HD's are.

Your PC is quite nice. But that GFX card needs a sorting ;) Also I hear Vista has issues with networks at the moment...I have experienced a part of it...Don't disable a network is the jist of it D: instead of just stopping it...it removes the option D: I lost my internet doing that and had to use system restore.
