Buying a new desktop

Postby Seraph169 on Fri Nov 14, 2008 4:47 am

Hi, I've been planning on getting a new computer for almost a year now and since that I had dropped my laptop and have an equivalent of roughly 1/3 of my screen left, I felt it was long overdue. I had always considered myself computer-learned, but being that I have what once was king some years ago, I'm not too familiar with duo and quad core processors, etc., however that doesn't mean that I am in any way illiterate.

To speed it along, my general use for computers has been, in so many words, a multimedia powerhouse with slight gaming capabilities, i.e. the games most difficult on the PC that I play are Half-life 2 (and modifications), Battlefield 2 and Company of Heroes. I've been reading news about up-and-coming games which really gave me the final kick to purchase a desktop rather than a laptop since I find myself not really traveling and in need of one anymore which gives me a little more boost and options. Here is what I have planned so far:

Inspirion 530slim
- Pentium dual-core processor E220
- Windows Vista home Premium (I've heard that this was much better than the home basic)
- 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz- 2DIMMs
- ATI Radeon HD 3450 256MB supporting HDMI
- 320GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache
- 16X DVD+/-RW Drive
- Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy HD Software Edition (Heard having a better sound card was more important; since I have owned laptops all these years, sound cards didn't really exist to me)
- ATI Theater 650 PRO Combo Analog/Digital TV Tuner with Remote Control ***
- 22 inch E228WFP Widescreen Digital Flat Panel

* I think it might be important to mention that I plan to play games in the future such as the up-coming Diablo and Starcraft titles, some other RTS's and other adventure-type games.

Given that I typically play games that aren't as demanding from the computer and I use my computer for general movie/music playing, web-surfing, etc., would you say that I am on track?

*** - I also have a question about the ATI TV tuner: From what I've been told from co-workers, this tuner gives a good picture and doesn't seem to have much difficulty in playing television. Since I am getting this because of the 22" monitor and my lack of television for my wife and I, I figured it might be a good investment. My question is, Is it possible to hook up a game system to the TV tuner and play it on the monitor or will I have to invest in a television set to do so?

Cheers,

~ Scott
