my Vista is counterfeit?

Postby MELVIn on Tue Jan 27, 2009 8:44 am

OK!

So.

for the first time in my life, I'm actually running a LEGAL version of Windows Vista. I finally had the money to pay that insane amount of cash to buy myself a OS... and now they're telling me that my CD key is counterfeit, and I can't update anything, and I keep getting that annoying message that I need to activate my windows. And when I do, they tell me my CD is borked.

I don't really feel like paying one million dollars for another copy of Vista, and tbh I'd rather pirate it again instead of paying for it because of this.

So is there anything I could do? Cause I hardly think I could call them and tell them to fuck off and re-allow my key.

Call up Microsoft, talk to some Indian guy, explain the situation, and he'll give you a new key.

isn't that what everybody does? I mean I don't have the receipt left, so there's probably no evidence to support the fact that I bought it. I could easily do the same with a pirated version. (like those who have built-in cd keys and are fully updateable and whatnot) If I had one of those and this happened, I'd just call support to get it to work again, and they probably know that. So wouldn't I need some sort of evidence of my purchase?

I would say have a word with them, you've got nothing to hide and it is a perfectly legal version. It's up to them to sort it out. Just play dumb and don't give off the feeling that you're a computer geek who would pirate it. :P

yeah it sounds like that's he only thing I can do. If that doesn't work out I've still got the Windows 7 beta to use untill my rage goes away and I can be arsed to buy myself another OS. I don't have high hopes though because there must be a reason as to why they blacklisted the key, and so if someone asks them to remove it from the blacklist they'd probably go mental.

on another note, would it be concidered illegal to just find a new key on the interwebs? I mean I already paied for my OS, and THEY fucked up, not me.

Well, I had the same trouble when I got XP for my mum ages ago, in the end I had to find a crack for windows update. I couldn't be fucked to go begging them for access.

I've used this site twice with some success - http://m.freepointsoftware.com/ It looks dodgy as hell but I've bought two copies of windows from there and both have worked. I can't say it's a perfect site but it's been okay for me.

Now downloading software pirate software I can agree with, as nobody is making a profit out of something that's condemned as illegal; paying for pirated software however!

Why?

Just call them. It's really, really, really simple. As a general rule, they realize that they don't want to be pissing their customers so they try and help you as much as possible. I've gone over my install limit with every single OS I've ever owned and there's never any problem re-activating it.

So apparently my CD-Key is blacklisted because it has been used to activate illegal versions of Vista, and after trying to explain that I actually bought mine, they told me there was nothing they could do.

So what's left? Do I really need to resort to downloading a pirate copy of vista that's updateable? I mean I guess I could get a key from the interwebs, but I've got no idea where I should look for one. And besides, they fucked me so I see no shame in trying to get a product that I BOUGHT working again.

dont give up without a fight. Stand up for yourself. You bought it legal, you get it legal, or money back. There are no other options. You bought it legally ffs!

and if MS can't help you, return the cd to sender... get your money back from the store you bought it from.

Dont be a couchsoldier, do something.

Threaten legal action. It makes all your problems go away.

At least for me

I did ask them if I could send it to the MS office in reykjavik, but they said I should return it to the store. But since I don't have the receipt left I doubt they're gonna take it back. I'm going to try tomorrow, and hopefully they will be able to look me up in their system or something like that. If that doesn't work out I'm going to bomb into MS's office full charge and raise hell, cause I'm getting my fucking CD key back. No two ways around it.
