Bad ping, conditioned

Postby elemenz on Wed Feb 04, 2009 6:08 pm

cs:s gives me 5-20 ping at nights, but now i get 140!!!!! during so called prime time afternoons/evenings....
but other ppl don't seem to have that much bigger pings.

so is it just my bad provider or what?
reinstalled steam and all few days ago, but as i said i already played a lot during late night, and ping was superb.... who or what should i look at to solve this ?

Hm. What service provider do you use? I mean in the UK, a lot of companies claim to give you unlimited downloads but secretly they monitor you and cap your speeds if you use it too much.

How's the weather? The snow in the UK caused terrible lag for me and a friend.

I'm from finland... weather is normal, live in a big city.
never had this kinda stuff before.

had my pc repaired, using a new seperate network card:
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC

i'm on cable, 100 Mbps dl.
and as i said, ping was fine earlier..... only cs:s has bad ping, all other traffic is fast.

You do know that your speed is also effected by what server you play in. I mean these servers you play, they have good pings obviously as you said. How long has this been going on for? Anything changed that could have caused this?

I'd either wait it out or call your service provider and ask them about it.

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_internet
Users in a particular neighborhood may share only a single coaxial cable line. So, the service can become sluggish if many people are using the service at the same time.

Too many people are playing with the internet at the same time. The only real fix is to go with a provider that isn't as popular or see if your provider has a direct fiber (so you're not sharing) service, which will probably cost you.

I once had a problem like this... and then had a problem with my internet status switching from local to global, i called my ISP's toll free line and this guy said, while munching on some gum, "I'm not sure what you mean by "local to global" "... i wanted to reply with "then why are you on this hotline?" but i kept talking to him, and he helped none at all...

anyways, my solution for you would to do what dragonfliet said and go with somone good, but less popular.

well i called my isp provider, they say all lines are fine etc.
and they are, i can use any other applications/ networks with 5 ping fast DL and all is fine,

except cs:s !

time - ping - players on the server
9:00 - 10 - 15
12:00 - 50 - 20
15:00 - 100 - 40
18:00 - 140 - 60

just getting a huge spike on that server for some reason...

what's the math behind it ? more ppl on the server, the higher my ping goes ?
but my conn still works fine with other software/apps.

frustrating.

Okay, so: first, a drop in speed is inherent to cable broadband at peak times, so it's not a 'problem' with the line, just a flaw.

second. Have you played any other games at similar times? Have you played on different servers? If so, what's changing? The way you're describing this sounds like it could be a problem with the server you're playing on not having enough upload capacity for the amount of players. Or it could simply be due to the time you're on and the load being put on your local connection. So fire up CS on a few different servers (with the same player counts, more or less) give DOD (it's similar enough) a run as well and let us know what's going on.

Yeah that is the downside to Cable internet the more people on it the higher your ping. They often boast about how much faster they are but really it is far less consistant then DSL is.

so how do i fix it ?
the tracert shows my packets run thru 13 locations. 10th and 11th timed out.... 8th and 9th were the tiscali.net ip.

am i forced to use tiscali as a router ? cant i tell my main provider here in finland to not fucking use them or change to someone else ?

Well with cable you have a set routing I believe. I know my friends called his DSL provider and asked to talk to a level two technician. He then gave him an IP of the server and sadi he wanted to get to that IP from his computer with a few hops as possible. Of course he lied and said it was for work. But sure enough the guy set him up and he has two hops and his ping dropped way down... With Cable I am not sure you can do that though. If you are loosing packets though you shoudl be able to call the provider and have then do something, not sure if they will do anyjting but it is worth a try...
