New computer

Postby Holy Socks on Tue Mar 03, 2009 5:17 pm

Since my old computer began overheating a week or two ago I've been looking for a new one, I have managed to get my old PC up and running again by cleaning it out and avoiding running taxing applications and could probably get it repaired but frankly I think its time move on. So anyway I began searching through various sites and shops and became quite sure that I wanted a laptop, having been amazed by how powerful some of them appear to have become in the time since I last looked, in the end I found this: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/ ... ionSection

I really didn't expect to be buying from PC world but it does seem like quite a good deal.

Anyway; I've posted this here to see if anyone had any other suggestions on what to buy (within a £750 budget) or anything positive/negative to say about the laptop I linked to. Any help anyone could give would be much appreciated.

Also how do you think It will fare running modern games? I'd like to give empire:total war a try.

I think you can do much better than that, it may have a huge screen but that sort of defeats the purpose of a laptop. Look for something with a geforce 9600 at least and a 15.4" screen instead and I think you're off to a better compromise. It'll be faster and actually portable

Take a look at the Dell outlet for a referbished desktop. Often they are not even used they where canceled orders which can not longer be sold as new. You can find some really good deals and get a beefed up machine... Just a though...

Thanks for the quick reply, when it comes to portability though I'm looking more for something which I can just move around the house or take to a friend's rather than something to use on the move or go on holiday with so I don't think the screen size will be too much of an issue there, however I'd certainly be prepared to go for a smaller screen if it meant getting a more powerful, faster laptop, so I'll have a look for some with better graphics cards.

I've just had a look at dell outlet but all of the laptops in my price range (£750) have only 256mb graphics cards. I know that memory isn't all that's important but I would like to go for a 512.

That is one downside it can be hit or miss with the site... But it is at least worth a look every so often... Sorry you did not find one in your price range...

I'd recommend that you have a look on eBuyer for a laptop. Their pricing is great and I've had no problems with any of the stuff I've ordered from them as it always arrived on the time they predicted. :)

What are you planning to use your laptop for? If you plan to use it for gaming you're going to be looking towards graphics card in the range of the 4XXX series for ATI and the 2XX series for Nvidia.

Thanks for the link Psy looks like there's some good deals there. Its been years since I've payed any attention to graphics cards ,I do want to use it for gaming and mapping as its replacing my current desktop, the laptop I'm looking at from pc world has a GeForce 9300M GS 512mb how do you think that will do?

Don't bother with a 9300. It's not really made for gaming. For Nvidia your looking for something like a 9600/9800 and for ATI your looking at 4850/4870.

I've been talking to some friends and they agree with you on the 9300 not being good for gaming, so I've been looking for something with a 9600 and I found this: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/ ... oid=-27749

First of all I should mention that the store near me is selling this for £780 not £899 which still makes it more expensive than what I was wanting but I could just about manage it. I've been looking through ebuyer and dell outlet and the outlets for other brands and I'm finding it hard to find a laptop with a good graphics for less than £800.
