Torque Game Builder for iPhone?

Postby Mr. Happy on Sat May 30, 2009 1:08 am

Has anyone worked with the Torque engine for the iphone? Specifically the 2D one. I was thinking about investing in this, not with the aim of money but I'd like to try it out. I have done very little coding though I've done alot of various kinds of scripting and can pick it up pretty easy. GarageGame's makes their stuff sound good, and it's not hugely expensive.

Anyway, I'm curious what it's like.

EDIT: Looks like you buy their toolset and a license separately, more expensive and a little more disconcerting but I'm still curious.

Alot of people that I know who have worked with Torque in the past were not impressed at all. They found the artistic pipeline too programmer-ish and the programming part felt kinda distance like they weren't in-touch with the code that they had written. Although none of the people I mentioned worked with the 2d version of the engine or the iphone engine at all. But it does seem a little over-priced (not sure if it included development access to the apple app store).

Onto the basic kit by apple though it seems a nicer option but the annoying thing about the apple bundle is that it seems to only be available on the mac by default.

Ya I've heard bad things about the 3D torque engine. The 2D one is supposed to be alot better. I've been playing with their demo and it's pretty good. Their indie licenses are pretty cheap ($100 without engine source), dunno about the iPhone stuff though. Making a game for the iPhone is a long term goal...I don't know anything about it actually, but I figure that wherever toolkit I start should have easily transferable skills and the people on their forums make it sound pretty easy to transfer.
