I am considering getting a Tablet...

Postby MayheM on Wed Jul 01, 2009 10:09 pm

I have seen several people on here talk about their tablets and I was thinking of getting one. I had one a long time ago when they first came out and it was pretty much crap. So I am looking at getting a decent one for not too much money. A few hundred dollars or so.

Any suggestions? Thanks...

I've got the Wacom Intuos a5 which (and though I must say I can't compare it to anything besides the bamboo) is well worth the money.

Stop thinking. Get one.

Simple as that, those thinks are freaking awesome and more important freaking useful. I have a quite simple Wacom "BAMBOO" tablet, bought it quite a while ago for under 80€. Not big or expensive, really handy and nice. Wacom seems to be the market leader and not because they are just the biggest, they have the best stuff, so I've heard.

Anyone else wants to add something? k, cool

The Intuos has a screen on it, correct? If I had the extra money, I would've gotten that instead of my Bamboo, though I certainly can't complain about it :)
If you want a good tablet for very very little (I'm talkin' $60, here,) then your best bet is the Wacom Bamboo. I know for a fact that Ad has one, and uses it for his drawings (check 'em out in the Sketch Dump!), and I have one myself. They're great for drawing in Flash or Photoshop, but it's hard (for me at least,) to draw with the same proficiency as I can on paper. I tend to turn and angle my paper to get a better line/perspective, but with the bamboo you have to look at your monitor for the image. I do believe that the Intuos tablets have a screen built into them, so you can treat it like a monitor if you want.

If you want a great tablet, I shamelessly recommend Wacom ;)

Nah, the Intuos tablet doesn't have a screen. I highly suggest you go with a Bamboo.

Not to hijack the thread, or anything, but would someone explain to me why often tablets are used in 3D modelling apps? I've also seen one used by a guy working on a level (not in Hammer though).

Isn't a mouse much better to navigate/move vertices around?

wacom cintiqs have screens.
using a mouse to draw is like using your tongue to open a letter. buy an intuos tablet, and get one with some real estate on it.

They might use it because it's more comfortable over long periods of time... *shrug*.

And there's no need for an Intuos tablet if you're not going to be using this in an industry job. A bamboo is just fine for drawing and things.

he said a few hundred dollars. if he has it to spend, he should buy the intuos.
more ease of use/functionality and higher quality equipment have nothing to do with an "industry job"

What are you looking to do exactly? The new bamboo is roughly 70 dollars and is a great starting tablet. It feels great and is a great tool for drawing, sketching, and even some professional use.

If you are looking for something more professional and don't mind spending couple hundred dollars, the Intuos read pen tilt and rotation. Get yourself an Intuos tablet, then invest another hundred on the art pen. The pen has a tip similar to that of a marker and the tablet will allow you to get thick and thin easily and more naturally.

just make sure your tablet's dimensions are at a similar ratio to your monitor's :)

I think bamboo's are 16:9, but there are some really good graphires that are 4:3

edit: oh yeah, and I have a bamboo :)
