Google OS Announced

Postby Blink on Wed Jul 08, 2009 3:50 pm

"We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you on to the web in a few seconds," said the blog post written by Sundar Pichai, vice-president of product management, and Google's engineering director Linus Upson.

Both men said that "the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web" and that this OS was "our attempt to rethink what operating systems should be".

I like it. I wonder if it will be okay for the average gamer.

It's just another Linux distro but considering that it's Google, I can see the uptake being quite high.

well I use google chrome and its full of bugs, I only use it because its fast... I fear that the google os will be fast to but full of bugs.... considering an OS is allot more complicated then a piece of software to browse the web

like psy said, its a linux distro with google chrome pre-installed. All apps to be used are supposed to be webbased (eg google docs) so thats about all it needs. Personally, i'd skip it.

Think that was a Microsoft vs Google joke :S

I really can't see this working well, it relies to much on the internet and speed of a connection, for instance if you wanna go through a gallery of photos on the internet your gonna have some waiting to do. Its also all very well saying that a computer needn't be as powerful to just browse this net, but this will probably mean it runs slower as well. I think its a nice idea, but i don't think it will become pratical for another couple of years. I'm only just coming round to accpeting laptops as a realistic alternative

They should consider it naming after Google's engineering director Linus Upson.

Perhaps LinOS? :P
