Advice on CPU

Postby andacg1 on Tue Jul 21, 2009 8:34 am

I have a monster PC that runs on Microsoft Vista Ultimate(My dad got 3 copies for free, he works at Microsoft :D )I have 9800 GTS or GTX 512 MB models , (dun remember which) 10 gigs of F***in RAM and a motherboard that supports 2 & 4 core CPUs. Like 6 months ago I upgraded my single core 2.6 GHz CPU to a newer model Duo Core(intel)3.2 GHz CPU to play Assassin's Creed (Which despite the reviews, was kind of repetetive.)Now I'm wordering if I should get a CPU that I found. 4 cores, Intel, 3.6 GHz. Looks great but it's 650 bucks. I use Hammer and want to start moddelling 3D on Autodesk Softimage. Also I own a full library of steam games. Shold I get it?
Donuts, is there anything they can't do?

I'm not sure what you want from us here - yes, you'll notice some difference, but only you can decide if the current performance you're getting from your PC isn't up to scratch. You'll be able to play most new games with no problem on your current rig, but again IT'S YOUR DECISION.

That's not a monster PC... Maybe a year and a half ago.

But if you want a better increase wouldn't a Nehalem processor be better? Of course you'd also have to get a new MB and DDR3 RAM then, so the cost would be a bit more more/the same as that $650 processor depending on what MB and RAM you choose.

Also, you're 12. How the fuck can you afford something like that?

[Edit] Sorry, I'm swearing a lot today. No idea why.

His Dad probably buys it all or gives him an insane allowance so it makes him feel like he's purchasing it himself.

Intel does not sell a 3,6 GHz quad core cpu.

Maybe it's shipped overclocked?

Adding to what everyone else has said, what is your gfx card? GTS or GTX? Because there's a bit of a difference there. Also, if you're rich enough to get it (as it seems so), then get it, if not, don't.

I'm guessing you're running 64-bit vista? If not, get your dad to get it. Is the RAM DDR2? DDR3? Because I would get a mobo with DDR3 first as your CPU is good enough as it is but DDR3 would be niiiice and a much cheaper upgrade than $650.

Ah yeah that isn't a monster rig btw, you only have one gfx card...to be "monster" I would say you'd need at least crossfire or dual-sli.

There is no such thing as a 3.6ghz cpu from intel. If there was, it wouldn't be 650$, it would be more like 2k.

Also, that 10 gigs of memory does absolutely nothing other than take up space unless you are running 64 bit. Valve uses 32gb pc's with water-cooled overclocked 3ghz quadcores for building their stuff in hammer. Anyways, here is a little help if this is a serious post:

CPU- compiles map faster
Memory- helps compile time greatly. Makes hammer run smoother
Video card- plays the game better

If I were you, I would use some intelligence, and just get the vastly superior cash-for-power ratio of AMD. However, if you are complaining about having 10 gigs of memory and poor for gaming, I guess u can waste your money on an intel :).

oh, and last but not least I would upgrade that 250 WAY before that cpu. You can't even play crysis on max specs with it. However, my dual core amd 3ghz with 2 gigs of memory can run it on max specs with a 295.
