Monitor not working

I plugged in my old computer with my old monitor to try to turn it on. When everything was plugged in and looked ready to go, I powered on my computer. It made a weird grinding sounding noise. (It recently had a power supply replaced). I turned it off, then turned it on again, same noise. I let it sit there for about 15 minutes, turned it on and my computer didn't recieve any signal. When I unplug the VGA connector (I think that is what it is called) the monitor has "Check Video Cable" on its screen. Any ideas on how I can fix it?
