Radeon HD 4870 with only one Power Connector?

Postby FlynT on Fri Jul 31, 2009 5:52 pm

hey lops,

i've got a small question to you all. I've plan to buy a Ati Radeon HD 4870, but a.f.a.i.k she got two Power-Connectors (you know that 6-Pin connector). So my question is can i run the card with only one connector or do i need two? No Cross-Fire or something else like that :)

Thanks in advanced.

You need 2. Depending on your setup I think your bound to have a spare molex to plug it in. For me, I have it plugged in via that PCI-E pin and a molex thingy.

There is usually a connector that comes with the card which plugs into a 4 pin molex connection and converts it into a 6 pin one.

you are supposed to link the card to two different rails, hence two plugs. If your psu doesnt have enough rails, its more than likely inadequate to power the card.

I bought this card a little while ago, and got really confused with the connectors - it included the converters to 6-pin in the box, but the instructions said the card DID NOT work when using them. I used them anyway, and so far no problems. I'm still waiting for an explosion though.

I got converter too, when I bought my XFX GTX260. I didn't have to use it though, but it was funny that there was converter and info, that says you shouldn't plug that converted powerd wire to that video card..
