So is this a bog standard able-to-use-word-but-not-much-else laptop you're wanting, or did you want a gaming capable one?

It's going to mainly be for work and internet but also probably will want to crack out a bit of football manager 2010 du temps on temps, so it doesn't need to be a super gaming one just capable of playing games.

I got to be honest I'm not that bothered about all the modding tools stuff, much more focused on something portable, quick, that can handle average games and that'll last me a few years. Rather pay a bit more and have it last a bit longer than have to buy a new one next year.

What are the sony AW series like? And what about macbooks?

The Samsung NC10 is portable, stylish, and doesn't weight a ton.
It's also got a trifle more horsepowah than a few other netbooks.
For reviews see: Bit Tech, Trusted Reviews and The Ultimate Netbook Buyer's Guide.
Oh, and I have just bought one.

Edit:
If you have a little more dough to spend, might I recommend the Samsung Q45? 12", 2Gb RAM, 250Gb HDD, 1.6Ghz CPU, ~£450.

Also worth considering is Zepto's Znote series.

I tend to dislike 15"+ laptops, as they're a real pain lugging around campus, and you often need a dedicated bag for them, whereas 13" and smaller should fit in most messenger bags.

Those Zeptos certainly are sexy looking pieces of kit.

I think you need to be more specific; the range of laptops in that price band is huge.
Do you care about portability? Gaming performance? Style? Screen size?

You really need to be more specific than just a budget. ;)

Have a look around a few websites and then tell us what you like.

Okay so I've found these which I think are pretty good for the price, I mean the ones edging over 1000-1200 aren't THAT much better to be honest, not to justify the pricing.

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Asp ... ersion.asp

http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/La ... &cs=ukdhs1

The last one being tuned up to similar specs. Also for a laptop what is more pertinant to speed - RAM or CPU, because I can change the processor from a 2.0ghz to a 2.4ghz for 110 quid or I can change from 4gb RAM to 8gb RAM for 250ish quid. So which is more important?

Code: Select all
Components
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1 (64 BIT) - English
Microsoft® Works 9.0 / English - (Does not include Microsoft® Word)
1Yr In-Home Warranty Support, including evenings and Saturdays
15.6” High Definition+ (1600x900) LED Display with TrueLife
4096MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
500GB (5400RPM) Serial ATA Hard Drive
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330
DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD)
6-cell battery
Intel WiFi Link 5100 (802.11 a/b/g/n 1X2) 1/2 MiniCard
No Bluetooth Upgrade
1.3 Mega pixel Integrated Web Camera
Black Colour with Matte Finish

They are the specs for the last one.

How often have you ever needed more ram? Sure, any windows > xp will fill it up no matter what, but really needing it? 4gb is more than enough for any program crappy enough to run on a laptop. get the ghz if you want to choose.

oh, and:

Microsoft® Works 9.0 / English - (Does not include Microsoft® Word)

lol. The mostly used microsoft program, word, not included. Or is that because of the 'word' incident?

It's not an issue I got a copy of office ready and waiting to go on so that's not an issue. Which of the three do you think is best as a laptop for university?
