Im not at all familar with laptop cpus and gpus, but i hear everybody say that weight turns out to be the most imprtant fator in getting buyers remorse :)

Depending on socket denseness you may also want to take a second or third look at energy consumption, which usually means the slower the better.

There is also a large difference in quality of the cases, look into that as well. Dell has decent laptops, i dont know if samsum or acer is a preferable brand or not, but i suggest you google some review or user commentaries about the specific laptops, just in case.

I'm going to buy a laptop for school too, and came up with the HP TX2-1250 TouchSmart. It is a convertible tablet pc, which means it has a (capacitive) touchscreen and you can rotate the screen for easier note taking.

It probably scores bad on structural integrity, because the screen has to swivel into tablet mode. Performance wise you could do better, because the touch part takes a big bite out of the price tag, and battery life could be better (I believe its around 3 hours for non gaming use).

Why would you want this laptop?
- Its easy to take with you (just under 2kg, 12.1 inch)
- perfect for taking notes (it doesn't distract as much as a normal laptop because it can lie in front of you like a book)
- Good for presentations (viewangle sucks like most lcd screens, but the screen is made for rotating)

And you don't need a notebook to compete with your gaming pc anyway, so as long as basic operations are smooth, you don't need the best hardware (although the 2,2ghz dual core is ok). (And if you live in the United States, you can get some customization.... I have no clue why they don't allow that outside the US...weird people.)

Last but not least, unlike some other tablet pc's, this one is under the €1000 mark.

Oh, and if you expect a lot of rain/dropping your notebook on the floor from time to time, get a toughbook
Where am I?

I plan on getting a netbook for most inschool work, because all I need is portability within the classroom and the desktop at home suits me well, netbooks are cheap as well and are very nice

Got an X16HD from Novatech, 2.8ghz T9600 intel duo core 2 processor, 4 gig of cosair DDR2 (couldnt get DDR3 on this one), a bit of a shitty graphic card but will be okay to play football manager on in the G105M Geforce Nvidia, HD screen, 500gigabyte harddrive all the usual odds and ends for 704 quid so pretty chuffed with it, will tell you how it is when it gets here, hopefully it'll be reasonably quick.

Get an old IBM. These things can actually run Valve games and should be cheap as hell. Sure they weigh a ton but you won't feel like crap when it happens to fall down and break. Since they cost as much as a sandwich anyway.

Pretty good specs and price for it. 2.8Ghz is more than enough, and your 4GB DDR2 is perfect. Especially for a laptop.
You don't need DDR3, and plus, it'd cut costs without losing much performance for what you're gonna do with it.
Good deal.
