Looking for a new GPU

Postby Gary on Mon Jan 18, 2010 5:35 am

I am in the market for a new graphics card, I have been recently looking at the Nividia GTX 260. Mainly as it is in my price range and it is a Nivida card(not a fan of ATI). I want games to look and run great, I am tired of my crappy on-board 6150, which lags when ever I see partials or Dynamic Lights(flashlights).

I am just wondering if you guys recommend anything.

I have XFX GTX260 and it's damn good. I can play all Source games on max, Far Cry 2 on 'Very high' settings, CoD: MW2 on full graphics. So it's basically (almost) all games on very good graphics (I also have Core i7 920 + 6GD DDR3).

That's awesome, I was hoping for that. A friend of mine also has a 260 and he likes it.

Also, you say XFX, that is the guys to manufacture it correct? How much difference is it from another?
Because there sold out on the XFX, they still have ZOTAC.

Though, looking at what otihome posted, the XFX brand isn't too great.
Other Thoughts: Don't buy from this brand, I'm going to RMA my card only to get another one from the same brand. It will probably die too! Read the reviews!

Cons: drivers, xfx, helping my friend build a pc with 2 of these... shoulda told him to get sapphire. no crossfire bridge comes. the drivers are the worst around. if you are foolish enough to buy this go to ATIAMD site for ccc xfx is junk. is becoming too much hassle to justify just getting these to run properly. vpu recoverys are already occuring. dont buy this unless you are xfx fanboy, much better companys to go with.
Other Thoughts: very glad i didnt buy them. feel bad for telling my friend to buy them. i buy sapphire and will continue to. recommend to everyone who reads this just go with someone else not xfx.

Go for a 5850 or a 5750! They support DX11 and will be in the same price range with greater or equal performance to the GTX260.

Get over your Nvidia fanboyism and get an ATI card.

Get any of the ati cards mentioned above. the price to performance ratio is greater than nvidia but the 260 IS a good card. It's just that you can get more for your money.

I've just heard it lacks phyx, which is supposed to support some cool things when used with a proper game engine.

I've also heard that DX11 has nothing really new.

DX11 does have new features and Physx is worthless. Trust us when we say to get an ATI card.

Maybe a 5750, as the 5850 is almost $100+ more then my original plan(GTX 260).

As you can see the 260 only slightly surpasses the 5750.

A 5770 seems to be the best for your price range. It beats the 260 in those benchmarks you posted.

Much thanks guys, you have been a great help. I'll most likely get the 5770, though I will try for the 5850(unlikely though).

5770 is for sure the way to go. I didn't even think they were making 260's any more anyways.
