Refresh Rate?

Postby Gary on Thu Jan 21, 2010 1:52 am

I have been wanting to know why I can't go over 60hz on a 1680 by 1050 resolution. I can go up to 75hz on a 1600 by 1024 resolution, but I can't stand it... is it possible to bypass this without hurting anything? I assume because I can already go up to 75hz on 1600 by 1024, that it couldn't hurt to go up to 75hz on 1680 by 1050. But I am not highly educated on monitor the refresh rate thing. So I am asking you guys for help.

If this helps:
I am currently using a VGA cable, will be using a DVI once I get my new card.
I am currently using a Nividia 6150, I will soon be using a ATI 5770.
I am using a 22'' LCD Acer X223W and will be using a 22'' TV as a secondary screen(when I get my new card) and it will be connected through a DVI-HDMI(until I get an HDMI cable).

Thanks.

I don't know, but 60 seems to be the most enjoyable refresh rate IMO. Working on some 85 hertz CRTs for work was a real pain on the eyes....no idea why but all the movements seemed off. I've never seen a 1680x1050 go over 60 hertz naturally. I think that the reason is that because there are so many pixels on the screen, you can get some tearing on each set-change?

I heard that CRTs can give people headaches if it has a high refresh rate. Though, I shouldn't have that problem as I am using a LCD.

With CRTs sometimes you can push them beyond their nominal capabilities. LCDs are probably a bit less flexible. Higher resolutions require faster data rates, (especially since there's a lot more work that goes into preparing a signal from a D-sub 15 (A.K.A. VGA) cable) so it's likely that 60Hz is as much as the LCD can handle at that res.
