Hammer editor block sounds

Postby Zantutzuken on Tue Feb 16, 2010 10:02 pm

Im building a map and dont know how to block sounds, as in
my friend hears all my sounds vividly no matter were he is in the map, to equipping a silencer to knifes hitting the wall, and its just like im right next to him and we are on different levels of the map, very far away :/
my opponent hears it as if im shooting at him
im wondering if there is anything to fix this, because this is a very annoying issue and takes the realism out of the map

any help would be great!!!

That's strange. This is not a custom mod, is it?

I'd check that you don't have any leaks or other issues.

Leaks:
http://www.interlopers.net/tutorials/2248

Sound problems:
Check that it isn't the game itself. Make a very large, sealed cube. Place a nice, big wall across the middle. Make your friend shoot shit over there. If it's still doing it you've somehow fucked up the game files, possibly in a very simple way. Then check with an official map. If it's NOT doing it there, you've somehow got hammer to fuck up your map and in turn really, really fuck up your sound grid.

If it's happening in an official map reinstall the game.

Basically, if your sounds do odd stuff like that it points to the usual 'layout sound grid' as I call it being either disabled or broken. This is nigh-on impossible to do accidentally. Sounds and what they sound like, i.e. pitch, echoes, etc are judged but the distance to the player and the intervening stuff. Basically, unless you've shanked the map, there's something pretty dodgy going on.

ok we compiled the map again and saw no leaks... but tomorrow we will make a new map like you said and see it it still messes up and ill come back with the results...
*edit*
also i did give him almost every texture in the map, so they are all custom textures*well 90%*
would this make the map mess up in this way?

The custom texture could only make an error if one of them had a very unusual surface type; not that I know of any weird ones that'd result in this error.

My only assumption is of course, it's your map, but I can't possible think why. Because the texture thing is clearly preying on your mind try changing all the custom textures in the map to dev textures, then compile and check. Use the cordon tool as well, just as a precaution.

If it works, excellent, you can add the textures back one by one and take note of when the error returns.

If it doesn't, there must be something in the map; an entity, prop or BSP that is somehow really fucking it all up.

There's an entity, or BSP, or something messed up on a whole new level.

Load the pointfile and see if there's any issues - if you don't know how get off your arse and either search for it here or on google. Not only does it find leaks, it finds major fuckups. If you have global state or something in action, take a look over it. Otherwise, I really am not sure what the hell is going on.

Which means you're clean. Errr....stumped. Totally stumped.

One last suggestion - use cordon tool to hack huge chunks out of the level. Playtest a room at a time. Then a quarter at a time. See if you can't narrow it down to something.

If not, looks like a rebuild. Sorry mate.

I'm fairly sure skins can cause this if they have altered scripts and sound files. I can't tell you how many times I've had a new skin with custom sounds fuck up and allow me to hear even the reload sounds from anywhere.

But you can hear him buying shit from far away so it does sound like your issue is what Major Banter has mentioned. Skins don't seem to be an issue here.
