Yeah I think the theory is to re-soldier the joints. In case the tin was of bad quality.

Ok, so just like you sourcemaps, 3 weeks ago my 8800gts goes screwy colors in game, and then I couldnt get it to display at desktop (i could hear my desktop).

So like you I got the 5770, great price (I found this thread after, you saw my post in simple questions)! Except in almost every game i've tried it crashes with vertical lines gradient pixels on the screen, or a black screen, or a gray screen. I can play orange box games for 2 hours before crash, l4d/2 for 15 minutes, gtaIV for 1 hour, fallout 3 for 30 minutes...

Its apparently widespread, and all combinations of drivers, bios versions, and hardware configs get it so :smt021
I figure i'll return it to newegg before 30 days and see if a replacement works better (apparently replacements with the same card randomly stop crashing on systems [hardware problem?])
:smt021 :smt021 :smt021

Well, at least hammer runs decent, albeit with the odd pixelated dimension markers, its there in vista too.

I still have my good old 8800 and it rocks. I changed my computer since I got it and I still don't see why I should get a new one - especially after playing ME2 with high settings and kickass resolution...

My 8800 has had some problems recently where I have to run the fan on high otherwise it tends to glitch out in games. It's either more heat-sensitive than before or the fan has lost efficiency. (And yes, I have a can of compressed air...)

I'm having the same problem with my 8800 gts. I get weird fps drops all the time in l4d, portal, tf2... How do you increase the fan speed?

My friend has a Nvidia GeForce GTX295.

He runs EVERYTHING at max settings.

And I die a little inside.

MY brothers 9800 GT just blew up yesterday. A few of the capacitors or something blew out and there is a nice scorch mark running along the top now.

No more Nvidia for me >:( I will stick with my 5870. Now I need to buy my brother a new card >.>

Either RivaTuner or SpeedFan can be used to adjust the speeds. I generally use RivaTuner, but you have to run it as Administrator.

You can also use RivaTuner to set custom "trigger levels" to step up the fan as the heat rises. However, I've found it easier to just leave it at 100% when gaming.

Wow this looks contagious. I guess I should watch out, as my old 8800GTS is probably approaching the danger zone as well...
Though it was great so far, and I haven't abused it in any way, so hopefully it will treat me with some kindness and live on forever.
