How is Windows 7?

Postby Gary on Tue Mar 23, 2010 6:20 am

At the moment, I am torn between wanting to "upgrade" to windows 7 or to just stay with windows XP.

I have had time to mess around with windows 7, as it is on my brother's computer. I have noticed some good things; new features, better GUI, faster boot time. Though I have also noticed some bad things such as; the over the top security(sometimes it won't let me runs things as admin, so it fails to install) and the over all speed seems slower then my current setup.

The real reason I want to upgrade at all is to get directx 10/11, any thing else will just be a plus. Though I don't want to upgrade just for that just to end up with a over-all worse experience.

So, fellow interlopers, I was wondering your thoughts on Win7; Why did you get Win7? or Why didn't you get Win7? Do you think Win7 would be a good choice for me?

My Computer specs:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Build 2600 SP2

Motherboard Model: ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus

Total Memory Size: 3 GBytes
Current Memory Clock: 387.5 MHz

GPU: ATI Radeon™ HD 5770

Processor Name: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ (Dual Core)
Original Processor Freqency: 2700.0 MHz

My brother's(because I mentioned my experience on his computer)

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Build 7600

Motherboard Model: Giga-Byte GA-MA770T-UD3P

Total Memory Size: 2 GBytes
Current Memory Clock: 535.6 MHz (8 : 3 ratio)

Video Chipset: nVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT (D9M-20)

Processor Name: AMD Athlon II X2 250 (Dual Core)
Original Processor Freqency: 3000.0 MHz

Can't really comment on your specs but I didn't see any drop in performance after I upgraded, and it certainly was an upgrade I think. If you're worried about cancel/allow crap you can just turn it off easy enough and use whatever security you want. I would def. say to get professional edition if only for the ability to run any program in a virtual windows XP environment.

I won't add anything, but I totally agree with MáØ.

Thanks for the input MáØ. Also, what are your computer specs?

Why would you use that virtual xp crap? Theres a compability mode. And most of the games support windows 7 (think there was a patch not too long ago which made even starcraft run again on my computer

Also, you can run any program in virtual XP environment on any OS you wish using VirtualBox or MS Virtual PC, you'll only be missing various conveniences of XP mode. Not that you will ever need XP mode though, unless you deal with ages old software written by a bunch of monkeys with typewriters.

Well if I did use it, it would likely be for software that some nations would consider "illegal" and don't get updates often/if at all >.>

I got Windows 7 because I didn't want to be stuck in the past.

Windows 7 is great. Never had any problems with it, and it's crashed I think possibly twice in two years and one was probably my fault anyway. Nothing to really say. :P Oh I also play games from 1997 on it too, so compatibility isn't really an issue. ^^

Windows 7 has been running like a dream on my Dell Studio Laptop, haven't had one problem so far, it just feels much more intuitive and simple. I upgraded from a knackered XP horse of a desktop PC, deciding to switch to a laptop for mobility reasons...so I cant really comment on experiencing performance drops as its a massive step up for me regardless haha.

Current system specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz
4GB DDR2 ram (going to upgrade to 8gb eventually)
ATi Mobility HD 4570 512MB
320GB HDD SATA
720p Hi-Def Widescreen display.

It plays most current gen games well on medium or high settings which is a plus for a system that was bought primarily for music production :P

I went from xp to Vista (pre-installed) and then up to Win7. Win7 is just what Vista should've been, and it still better than XP now. Intuitive is a good word for it. It's good for the average user, but isn't covered in bubble wrap for anyone who wants to experiment. It just, works. ;d

It's like Mac, shiny and eye-candy.
However, it's the first shiny and eye-candy OS that's actually good.

From all of your experiences it seems like it won't end up being something I'll regret.

Thanks guys, I'll go ahead and look into upgrading now. One last question, there is two versions; an upgrade and a OEM. Which one should I go with? There any disadvantages if I go with the upgrade version?

My bro upgraded, and when comparing our versions, there is no difference between an original OEM or an Upgrade, so go for either! Upgrade is probably cheaper though.
