Ew, upgrades. Call me old-fashioned but I like a fresh install from time to time. Keeps your OS structured and your important files backed-up and nimble. Not to mention the "slag" that always mounds up in the imaginary cogs and wheels of my computer.

Ah, I see. I will most likely get the OEM. Thanks.

Thanks guys, I'll go ahead and look into upgrading now. One last question, there is two versions; an upgrade and a OEM. Which one should I go with? There any disadvantages if I go with the upgrade version?

My bro upgraded, and when comparing our versions, there is no difference between an original OEM or an Upgrade, so go for either! Upgrade is probably cheaper though.

If you'd buy an upgrade, you always would have to install the older os, to upgrade from.

I upgraded at one point but I was forced to roll back to XP due to one critical program not being able to install since it used Installshield, which was apparently not working on Windows 7 at the time. That and my ancient sound card isn't supported in Win7, so I had no sound. I ordered a new, simple card for when I eventually do upgrade after the mentioned program is no longer needed.

Everything seemed perfectly fine for me. The intuitiveness is definitely a huge plus, and any gamer is gonna want to get it eventually since it has DX10 and DX11. It's only a matter of time before DX9 becomes obsolete (even if that time is far away). Having a future-proof computer never hurt anyone.

Long story short, make sure all your hardware and any important software is compatible then upgrade when you have the all clear.

the upgrade also takes a cd with the older os, as long as you got a valid key it should work (note: this is afaik)
The upgrade isnt necessarily an *upgrade*, it can also be a fresh install, it only requires a valid older windows.

The oem requires hardware to be bought with it (some shops dont care, others do). It is also more picky as to when you change hardware you need reactivation, although this is the same if you upgrade from an oem.

I have my XP desktop and a newer Win7 laptop.

My impression is that you won't actually regret it, but I'm also not in a big hurry to upgrade. Note that Win7 Home Premium does not include remote desktop, which pretty much sucks since VNC tends to asplode when a UAC window comes up.

VNC? Ew. Teamviewer ftw :D Works like a charm with things like that.

Thanks guys, I will have to mess with my brothers computer some more and get used to it. Then I'll most likely end upgrading.

The problem lays with UAC. REMOVE IT NOA.

Remove UAC? I've got it set to most-paranoid and it's been pretty convenient compared to what I do on my XP machine, which is using "Run As" and sometimes fast-switching to the administrative user. I like my security...

Installed it on laptop, installed drivers, disabled all UAC and the like, modded a bit in the files to make it fit my taste, setup the processbar to not stack windows, its naice, faster then Vista, only 1 slight problem with card reader driver, but acer sucks at providing them..
Source is my way of life, if i didn't have it, i'd be tearing down walls and altering my house all the time.

I thought OEM isn't sold outside of Germany?!? cause of some weird laws we have (similar to the weirdness of censoring our games)

I got OEM. Practically no difference. The official difference is you don't get support from Microsoft, but thats not a big deal since there are enough resources on the nets to fix your stoof.

Why are people saying you need an older version of windows to use an upgrade copy? I'm running an upgrade copy and I used it to do a clean install. One install was all that was required and it activated first time.

But you had Windows on that computer at some point previously?
