You don't need a previous version of Windows. All you do is install onto a formatted partition.

What he said.

You also need to be careful installing 7 on machines with multiple hard drives and partitions. When doing a clean install it likes to put the BOOTMGR on the first drive/partition in the list of drives. Every time I've installed Vista/7 my secondary drive has been listed on the top, even though I chose to install onto my primary drive which was down the bottom of the list. Once Windows finished installing and rebooted I would get the "BOOTMGR IS MISSING" error and have to reinstall. The only way I could solve it was to physically unplug my other drive so Windows couldn't see it. Not sure what you'd do with a partition if it ever happened.

Not that it will happen to any of you, just a heads up in case it ever does.

I had another question. I heard that there is a 30-day grace period, as in, you can install it but it won't work after 30 days.

As I said before, my brother got Win7. Could I say, install it on another partition and dual boot(Use either 7 or XP)? I just want to be sure it won't screw up my XP install when win7 expires.

Thanks for any help.

No more questions. Just buy or download Windows 7. It's better than any previous Microsoft OS.

Why not just get an upgrade version of 7 and piss XP off completely, unless you have a valid reason for holding on to a nine year old OS.

Well, I don't currently have the money, I should soon. I just wanted start using it on this computer, so I could get used to it.

The reason for having dual boot for the time being is so that, in case I don't get the money in time I don't loose everything. Also, having XP on it's own little spot on my drive will allow for some more backwards compatibility.

Error: Windows 7 does not understand this statement. /implode.

Never encountered anything that hasn't run on Win7. I still play Battlezone from 1998 on it :P

Well, if they is no point in keeping XP, once I get Win7, I will just wipe out XP.

Though, I still want to install Win7 for the time being, thats why I am asking that if I install Win7 without activating it, on a another partition, once Win7's grace period does expire and becomes unusable, will XP still work as it did before?

If it's set up as a proper dual boot system, why would XP fail once 7 has expired? It won't break everything once the trial period has ended.

Also maybe this trick HERE will work for you. It apparently allows you to extend the trial period from 30 to 120 days.

Vista was shit in every way, compatibility included.

I'm tempted to think it was a testing ground for Win7.

The best operating system ever, once UAC is off.
