Softimage 64bit vs 32bit

Postby MayheM on Thu May 20, 2010 9:10 pm

Ok, I took the plunge a few months ago and started to take time and learn how to make my own props. I installed Softimage 2010 64bit on my machine and started to work away. I then got to the point where I realized I had forgotten to install the the Source add-on. So I went and did so... the problem is, the Source add-on does not work in the 64bit version of Softimage. So, I need to install the 32bit version on my 64bit Vista Ultimate.

So, does anyone know how to do this? Softimage will not allow spaces in the folder structure for install, so it does not go into the Program Folder directory. Therefore it can not be installed in the "Program Folder(x86)" directory to make it 32bit. I am at a loss and would really like to get this working.

Any help would be great. Thanks

Oh man, I hated the fact that it takes no spaces... I just had to put it into my drive directly in a folder, C:\XSI

I don't think there is a fix for that. Sucks about the no 64bit source addon

ive used that program, but if you really want to install in a spaced folder, you *could* try installing it somewhere else, then moving it, adjusting registry and .ini entries whereever needed.

eg, install it in C:\heyxsithisisactuallyprogramfiles\ and then replace heyxsithisisactuallyprogramfiles with 'program files (x86)' in registry and presto.
No guarantee that itll work, but hey, a program that doesnt accept spaces deserves to be in the stone age.

Ha, yeah someone said I could rename the folder but the registry shit scares me. Though that does seem pretty simple...

Would an Environment Variable work? "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\XSI"?

The above variable is valid (minus the \XSI part) on my 7 x64 install in the command line. If Vista x64 doesn't have it, you could try and create one (System Properties -> Advanced -> Environment Variables).

Putting XSI in the Program FIles (x86) folder won't make it 32-bit. You must have a 32-bit version (separate download probably?).

I am running the 64bit version of XSI v7.01 in the
and to export models i use the mod tool 7.5.

Usually 32 and 64bit version are not installed in any programs folder but in
the Softimage Folder under xsi_vxxx32bit or xsi_xxx64bit.

Names of the folder can be set in the setenv.bat (the environment script)
Open the user tools under Programs-> Softimage Products -> User Tools
there you can open and edit the installation path.
(set SI_HOME=C:\Softimage\whatversionsoever)
but most time they are automatically set after installation.
So seperate download and installation looks necessary to me
Hope this helps

I didnt notice any differences. In fact, this 32 bit and 64 bit program fles folder thing is only for organizational purposes, but does not say how a program is launched... I had steam in both folders at once, both worked, even though Steam is 32-bit...

So, XSI just installed to c/softimage...

I assume this has already been solved, but here's another solution, in case someone else comes looking for it. You could also use short file names, which won't have spaces. For example, the C:\Program Files (x86) directory is the same as the C:\PROGRA~2 directory.
