Downloading cause fps drops even when playing Single-Player

Postby trcc on Fri Jun 04, 2010 10:58 pm

Before I re-install windows 7 64 bit, I want to hear your thoughts on this matter. I have fps drops since I installed windows 7 in march... I could not really figure out why UNTIL NOW.

I just made a 512x512 map in ep2, I ran the map and I could notice few drops here and there, nothing major.

Then I decided to download Ihatemountains l4d campaign.. and as I was downloading the map, I could not even MOVE inside my 512x512 map until the download finished.

If I press the talk button in an application such as Ventrilo, FPS drops when button is pressed...

When I play l4d maps on the net, the more players there is in the server, the worse it gets. Playing the same map in single-player will cause no lag.

My computer specs are:

Geforce 8800GTS 512 meg
6 gig DDR2 800
core2duo 2.67 ghz processor
700 watts powersupply

WTF IS GOING ON WITH MY COMPUTER! It used to run so well under Windows XP.. HELP!!

Well, that is a bit strange... Only thing I can think of is that the IO bus is getting congested which is rather unlikely, but it would mean that something is either seriously wrong with your mobo, or something seriously wrong with your drivers. I'd blame it on an IRQ handler for the network adapter causing issues. Can you try a different network adapter?

Hmm i don't understand most of the terms you used BUT :D

My computer is linked to a network adapter 2 floors below from a big ass network cable. (like really long) But I have no problem playing games such as dota ( warcraft 3 ) and I download shit up to 1 mb/sec (which is limit of my connection)

What drivers do I need re-install?
What is IRQ handler?
Network Adapter = router?

brb, buying lottery tickets! 50 millions tonight, yeah! gogo luck.

The network adapter is the jack on your computer that you plug the ethernet cable into. Also, you might wanna try a shorter cable. Excessively long Cat5 cables have been known to cause issues (because the signal degrades even inside wires at high frequencies). Yes, you'd possibly still be able to play and DL at proper rates, but it makes it much more taxing on the hardware too, which could delay software.

I don't think reinstalling drivers would help (though it might help to clear the TCP and winsock stacks). However, making sure you have the latest drivers for your network adapter might help.

Don't worry about the IRQ stuff, not really much you can do I think. Might be able to go into device manager and go to the devices resource settings. I don't recommend it though.
