Have you moved recently? Maybe you ought to check the electrical socket and your surge protector - could be causing abnormalities with your PSU.

To me, this sounds like a powering/motherboard issue. Check for under/over powering, any wiring issues etc.

In addition to the PSU-type issues, I'd mention that my 8800-GT is up for replacement really soon, and (despite blowing it out with canned air) I've had to override the fan settings because the stock ramp-up (of fan speed versus temperature) is far too slow.

my 8800GTS had a custom heatsink + fan which was constant RPM (not variable) so the card overheating was not an issue. Yes I did move before the problems started, and for some reason I actually dont have a surge protector (:o) so I think my plan of action is to get a surge protector, new PSU, then test with another graphics card .....

Just gonna bump this quickly in case anyone finds this thread with a similar problem. The issue was caused by a faulty PSU, as soon as I put a new PSU in my machine I've had no problems for over a month now.
