Help :( Computer Problem

Postby no00dylan on Sat Sep 04, 2010 12:33 am

Getting this error when I boot up-

NOTICE - Hard Drive SELF MONITORING SYSTEM has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard drive problem.

Then when I'm in windows, it tells me my hard drive might be failing and to back up my files, then my PC runs slowly. Are there any solutions other than replace the hard drive... could it be something else? Is my PC... my dear, beloved Christine living out her last moments?

Yeah new HDD time. 3-5 years is about the average lifetime of a drive in frequent use before failing.

Back that shit up and get a nice new TB drive for 80 bucks.

Thanks, but I found the same thing except from a company that specializes in hard drives, for 60% without being on sale.

Thanks everyone, I was hoping for a better, less money requiring solution, but oh well.

Its all in the petabytes now! (Joking)

There are soo many cheap TB drives, cant wait till they get the SS drives to be cheaper and larger though.

Yeah, its not always very fun. My other HDD failed not to long ago. Bad sector, my computer would randomly freeze at different intervals. Gradually getting worse over time until it happened within the first few minutes of restarting, rendered the computer unusable. I was able to pick up a new drive and managed to salvage the more important things from the other.

Works like a charm now that I tossed the other one out :)

FYI, the key-phrase you want for this is SMART. It's a little spec that says how hard drives can measure certain indicators and send up a flag when the indicators get into the yellow-zone.

There are tools you can use out there to figure out what kind of problem the drive is reporting, but as others have said consider this strong "Make sure you've got backups" reminder. Note that the drive might continue to function fine for years and be useful as a disk for temporary stuff like swap/paging-file or temporary caches... So I wouldn't throw it straight into the trash by any means.

Learn from my lesson; when the computer says "back up your files", do so.

I have a junked HDD that I can't even hack-run.

Hey guys... I'll be gone... for a little while... yeah I wanted to back up those files but I had nothing to back it up to.. I got the essentials into the recovery drive.. the tiny, tiny recovery drive, and saving up money to get that new 1tb drive... but it's a bit difficult right now we don't have much money, I managed to save most of my l4d2 campaign on a flashdrive, but all my other unreleased usless poo poo work is gone, all gone. Well guise, I'll be back one day, and when I do return, you'll know it, because your life will be turned upside down from what I have coming.
