I have not posted here for some time, though I desperately need advice so I thought I would seek your support. So, I have just purchased myself a new rig, which goes a little something like this:
Intel i7 950 @ 3.06ghz
Thermaltake Contac-29 CPU cooler
Coolermaster GX650W PSU
GIGABYTE ATI 5850 1GB
GIGABYTE X58A-UD3R Motherboard
6GB (3x2GB) 1600mhz G-Skill DDR3 RAM
I put everything together as one would expect, with little worries that I was aware of. Though, whenever I start the machine up, all I get is a black screen - not a "check signal cable" error, but a straight up black screen. I tried using my old video card and my old VGA monitor but to no avail. The Harddrives spin, the fans spin, lights on the motherboard come to life, and the DVD drive even appears to respond to the Windows disk I slipped into it, and yet I get no video.
The first two times I booted it up, I received a clicking sound which was fairly loud, though I'm not sure if that was just loose wires leaning against fans - there were some wires doing just that which when moved stopped the sound. Though of course I cannot help but worry as to whether maybe the sound signalled the death of my darling i7.
The cooler am I using is not the stock one (I had little choice but to buy an aftermarket cooler, this is Australia), so I'm curious as to whether it might not be fastened correctly, or in such a way that might have allowed the CPU to overheat in the 30 seconds or so the computer has spent on. I have been aware of no heat from the CPU, there was none that I could feel myself. I'm not even sure if having a unprotected/poorly protected CPU on for so short a time (it has not been on for longer than 30-50 seconds at the moment).
I don't think the problem is the Video card (certainly not the monitor), I tried both the 5850 and my old 4670, with neither producing any sort of result. Could there some form of video I/O concerning the motherboard which was be connected?
If any of you could help me with this I would be very grateful, I really would hate to have a $1400 paper weight. I just hope that this is a simple elementary mistake
