Wireless router question

Postby Megadude on Mon Jan 10, 2011 8:04 pm

When I signed up for broadband, my broadband provider provided a wireless router. If I wanted to use my own wireless router, could I just substitute one for the other or would it cause problems with my internet connection if I used my own router?

If it's one of those modem+router boxes they usually give, then I'm 90% sure you can just plug your router into one of the Ethernet ports on their box and connect that way. I doubt this will add much delay, if any at all.

If the modem is separate from their router, just swap routers and it should work fine.

most if not all routers are DSL modems, none, if any, are Cable modems. So if you have broadband cable, it probably wont work, if you have DSL, it probably will.

The only reason I can think of that you could run into issues is if there are certain ports that need to be enabled on the router or if the router they sent is pre-configured to work with the modem. If this is the case you may need to configure your router to have the same settings as the one they sent you. Connecting it and testing it is a quick way to check...

ISPs tend to be shipping better and better gear these days. Did they send you crappy hardware?

It was ok for what I needed it for when I got it given to me, but I got it 4 years ago. Have now got a wireless printer but looking through the internet, the router I got is crap at adding other wireless bits to it, so I'm looking at routers that will allow me to add my new printer to it.
