AMD 6970 Graphics Cards

Postby Jangalomph on Mon Jan 31, 2011 9:28 pm

Hey there,
I was looking up some of the 6970 HD Graphics Cards and noticed they range from like $375 to $600 bucks. Does any one know when the price would go down below 250 or lower? As in a time range. Because after the 6000 line came out 5000's went way down. Which is when i purchased my 5770 HD for about $150.

Also would you say that the 5970 is better than a 6970?

I heard that there is some controversy on this.

Ah, okay. What do you think the best graphics card out of all is the best?

Its not what I think, its what the truth is. The AMD 5970 is still the most powerful GPU out there, but the Water cooled gtx 580 by EVGA might be comparable.

Well, right now I have an Nvidia 480 and it is freaking AWESOME!!!. Running full settings on almost every game and my frame rate is solid as a rock. I am saving my money no to build a brand new rig, I will be getting the 580 to put in that one, maybe even two depending on how much I can save up.

It is totally up to personal preference though. I have been buying Nvidia since back when it was called Voodoo and have just grown used to it.

Yeah, i've grown used to AMD and ATI. Its just a personal choice. But if the 5970 is the most powerful.. then what difference does the new 6970 have?

Also is it possible to water cool a graphics card? And how does water cooling work.

Almost every? I play every game on the highest settings with my ATI HD6870, this is my 2nd ATI card, and I've had 3 nVidia cards before those and I must say; I personally don't really care about the brand. I don't like that hammer fucks up with an ATI card, but there's an easy fix. In comparision ATI cards are usually more bang for your bucks, and they make some damn impressive cards right now, only when nVidia had the 8800GT they had a better performance/price ratio.

The reason I say "Almost every" is because I refuse to play a game at less than 100 fps. Most games I play I do not even come close to getting my frames that low. In most cases I am hovering around 250 fps. Overkill sure, but I am used to it. But to be honest the main bottleneck in my gamer is the CPU. By video card is plenty strong and the machine would perform even better is I had a CPU upgrade. That happens to be first on my list to upgrade for the new gamer... Then my current gamer will be my mapping machine.

some times i ask my self how much frames do you actualy see!!! 250 fps on fullHD on a 60hz (for the noobs Refresh rate that fills up your screen 60 times per second) flatscreen.... hmmm 250fps/60hz=4.166666666666667fps in 1hz.... is my math doing crazy?? so you miss 3.166666666666667 frames per hz ;)

Water cooling is an enclosed heat-sink. Where rather than of having cooler air running over the heat-sink to transfer heat you are using water.

Water has a much higher heat transfer coefficient than air which means it can carry more heat and more efficiently per square unit. http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/overa ... d_284.html

The same system can be integrated into many other things, such as the chipset, graphics card, memory, etc... you just need to remove the heat sink and install the water block. http://www.koolance.com/water-cooling/d ... Path=29_46

AMD (Previously ATI) made the naming scheme different for this series (6k) Previously X9XX meant a dual GPU card. Now it just means its a high end single GPU card. X8XX are now mid range cards.

1 - games are designed to refresh 60 times per second
2 - most monitors are designed to refresh 60 times per second (120Hz for 3D, more than that if you have money to burn)
3 - If you've spent any amount of time playing counter strike at 14 fps, you appreciate even getting 30, nevermind 300

side note, I've got a GTX280 and a Q6600 (@3GHz), and I run everything on max, or near-max. Might have to throw some overclocking in for Crysis 2

It's about the flow of images, it doesn't matter that much how much fps it is when it's fluent which is around 25fps and up. The maximum refresh rate of a (normal) monitor is max. 60hz, so the goal is 60fps, so you won't waste any of the refresh possibilities of the monitor, but that's also the max. The only good thing of having high fps is that the peaks/drops in fps are not (if everything is ok) visible.

You can buy a 6950 and unlock it to a 6970 for the exact same temperature and performance with less power usage:

I bought my MSI 6950 Twin FrozR II and it is officially the quietest graphics card I've ever used in my life. Ever. It's spectacular, the only thing I can hear is my fans (10dB Noctua's)... it's amazing. Get one. Now.
