My new rig

Postby DonPunch on Wed Dec 04, 2013 11:38 pm

Just got most of it in the mail today, and order the last part just now.

Looking forward to putting this together and shredding some UDK Lightmass.

Nice set, but some strange choices though. 3*2 + 2*8 strips of ram? Two intel ssds of the same type but with different pricings? one hdd, two velociraptors and three SSDs? Enough fans to build a Dornier do X?

I really cant imagine any situation where this stuff wouldnt just be overkill, it would actually force whatever country you use it in to build an extra coal powerplant :)

yeah, some of the stuff was just left over from my old (current) computer. The pricing isn't anything solid on there, that's just how pcpartpicker.com works. I didn't try to find the same one from the same seller 2x's, although I did pay 2 different amounts for the 2 ssd's. Black Friday/Cyber Monday had too many deals to pass up.

The fans are because of the size of the case, which you will see when I post pics. I replaced all of the stock fans, even the ones on the water cooling to be quite as possible. This list also doesn't include the custom bay stuff I got, which is some fan controllers and LCD display for just some extra bling.

I can tell you, I will use every bit of power this has to offer with the work that I do. Lightmass in UDK is a pain in the ass when you start making larger levels. Also rendering high resolution maps in 3DSMax is something the processor and ssd's raided together will shred. I am also considering replacing all the ram I have with quad channel 2400(OC) memory kit.

The mobo has some badass feature too. I can add a mass storage mechanical hard drive and up to 3 SSD's that will automatically boost its performance, SSD Caching. Basically it can make the mechanical drive operate similar to a SSD's performance at a much lower cost.

The weather has slowed down delivery in my part of the world, but I should have everything in the next week or so. Pics soon to come!

That's a lot of storage and dear god is that a lot of power. Just remember that with each additional drive you put in your system, you add another potential point of failure in your storage network. How's your storage redundancy going to be, anyway?

240 ssd is the primary drive with primary applications (os, 3ds max, mudbox, photoshop, etc), the 2 180 ssd's are going to be raid 0 to be used for UDK, and rendering. The two 10k drives are my mass storage devices for music, video, and project file repos. The 750gb I really don't have much use for at the moment, and will probably just leave in my old pc to use it as a server or htpc.

Back up drives are on an external NAS.

SSDs in RAID? Now thats a waste of money. As are 10k drives for music or video. But whatever, if you have the money, spend it!

I fail to see how its a waste of money. Waiting around for hours on end while projects render or lightmass runs is a waste of money to me.

If you truly have that much of an excessive buttload of money to spend you should've replaced those 680's with 780's!

Man this case is awesome. So much room for cable management.

I spent about 6 hours on it last night, and still have another couple to go before I'm done.

I did some filming along the way, but ill be sure to post it all when I'm done, but its turning out awesome!
