Earth to be hit by asteroid in 2029?

LONDON, England (CNN) -- What should we do if an asteroid is on a collision course with Earth? This question is being taken increasingly seriously by scientists as more is learnt about the impact a near earth object (NEO) would have on the future of civilization.

It might sound like the plot of a Hollywood movie, but one gigantic asteroid is scheduled to come within 20,000 miles of Earth in the near future -- a near miss in cosmic measurements -- and the possibility remains that it could hit our planet and cause catastrophic devastation never seen before.

"Human expansion into our solar system is fundamentally about the survival of the species. Our species hasn't been around long enough to experience a cataclysmic extinction event. But they will occur again whether we are ready for them or not," NASA Administrator Michael Griffin told an audience at Langley Research Center.

The asteroid that has made the space community sit up and take notice is nicknamed Apophis, after the Egyptian god of destruction.

Over 300 meters in diameter and weighing 25 million tons, it is set to come within 20,000 miles of Earth in 2029. And that date for the near miss? April 13, 2029, which should get the doomsday soothsayers excited.

Put in on your calender.

Only big enough to cause local damage, nothing Earth shattering. The Earth is 2/3 water, so more than likely hitting an ocean. It looks like the margin of error still puts it past hitting us. But close enough that it could be pulled out of it's normal orbit by Earth's gravity, where it could still be a problem later.

The title of this article is far fetching. The world is not going to end because of this asteroid even if it does hit. Fear mongering press all in the name of the Euro/Dollar. Granted it should be watched and something done if it can.

Hmmmm, maybe you dont understand what happens when something with that amount of mass hits something like the earth?

It would be a catastophic event, hitting the ocean is like hitting solid concrete at the speeds were thinking of. Water is vaporised, tusnami type waves will probably cover entire continents and most of the ozone will be obblitterated.

This all said, it seems highly unlikely that there will be an impact in our lifetime, and this is probably all just scare mongering. Like governments and mass media like to keep it. That way they make more money, WOO HOO!

I'm not worried at all...that's 20+ years away. If scientists are really that concerned, they have plenty of time to think of hundreds of ways to stop the collision.

and please...it WILL NOT cause "global catastrophe"

according to NASA, it would take a object that's 1000m in diameter to cause "tremendous LOCAL damage" -- the asteroid we're talking about is less than half of that (only 300m) so let's cut the doomsday crap.

I don't think you understand. This asteroid is only 1000 feet/300 meter across. It would take an asteroid several miles wide to strip the atmosphere and rip up continents. The asteroid they are talking about would only be equal to a few nukes. Like I said local damage.

as I said -- if you don't believe me/us click on the NASA link:

it all comes down to who you believe will accurately report the goings on in space:

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration

or

The Cable News Network

22 years away, it could change course by then so there may be no threat at all.

very good, I hope it hits us.

But they say with increasing technology we will have many ways of redirecting/blowing up/disentagrating asteroids so it wont cause any damage. fuck.
