Distributed Compiling Tools - Signature List

Postby Rustvaar on Sun May 06, 2007 3:15 pm

Right guys, this is the letter we'll be forwarding to VALVe (for the attention of Mike Durand, apparently). If you agree with what we're asking - and take note; we are asking, not demanding - then just jot down your full name and for the benefit of showing the diversity of our community, the nation in which you reside.

Any objections to the above then give me a shout on IRC, PM me or post here and we'll try and work something out - I'll take a collection of names and update the original post as regularly as I can.

To whom it may concern,

our community of developers would like to bring to your attention, the desire for distributed compiling of levels for the Source Engine.

It is understandable that this may not be viewed as a high-priority project for you; however it would certainly prove a useful tool for all amateur developers while also acting as a means of further boosting the reputation of Valve as an innovative and community-oriented corporation.

We understand that Valve uses a distributed compiling system for their 'in-house' level compiles. If this were added to the SDK it would be viewed as a great step for Valve and its developer community.

To clarify our understanding of distributed compiling, much in the same way Stanford University has utilised the system for their ‘Folding@Home’ project – The ability to distribute the compilation process to multiple nodes across a network for a faster result.

In the hopes of affirming that this would be a viable and worthy project the following is a list of signatures of those who are in agreement;

1. Ross McFarland - Glasgow, Scotland
2. Joe Russell - Lyme Regis, England
3. Merlijn Van Holder - Mechelen, Belgium

I'd appreciate if you simply added the following when posting;

Code: Select all

With the quote tags included; This means I can easily run through the list, grab names and read any opinions or comments seperately - Keeps things less of a burden on me and makes the chances of being missed off the list a little lower.

Thanks guys!

go for it!
You click on Build or type
make (or some equivalent), and you are astonished, then mortified, as you realize that the whole world is being
recompiled and relinked!
