U.K. Bombings

Postby Khaeotixs on Mon Jul 02, 2007 10:20 am

Well, in light of the recent bomb attempts on the UK, do you think that we should tighten our border controls? Too many immigrants seem to get into our country without proper documentation and the lord knows that England has a small enough coastline that they must be coming in through the ports.

It's good to see some prevention instead of the "too late" news coverage, I was glad this was taken seriously. One bomb was set to go off @ picadilly circus right? that's funny because now that I've been there I can imagine where it was etc.

One thing that happened recently was a car was set on fire and two people drove it into Heathrow airport, one of the big airports in England. At least a bomb can be inconspicuous at first, but seeing a car on fire drive towards you you don't have think "Ima move outta the way".

Apparently the car crashed and the two guys got out... on fire and started attacking the police.

Apparently it wasn't even Muslims or terrorists, just a local gang in London. :S

It's really a matter of proportionality. The chances of you being personally effected by a terrorist attack are miniscule and even if you do worry about it you aren't any safer. So there really is no good reason to worry about it.

On the other side of things. I think imigration and the ability to move between countries is a necessary part of global culture, and there is nothing wrong with it at all. But I still think we should tighten up on our border security in the UK, because it's legal imigrants we want, not illegal ones.

Edit: Er... Slick... I think that you are thinking of the Glasgow attack. To my knowledge, nothing like that happened at heathrow.

Don't believe everything you hear, a badly driven car and a boot with a small gas cylinder does not an Al-Qaeda terrorist attack make. The UK government is known for hyping terror attacks in the very same way that the American media does also.

Offtopic but, if the UK govt wanted to secure its border, it could do it. Same with the American border. When the govt thinks it's ready to introduce ID cards, it will say "This will fight: terrorism, fraud, ID theft, immigration, paedophiles, the weather etc.."

Then the fun will really start, because people will realise that it didn't make them safer, and things got a whole lot worse.

first off, no. we do not have a regularly scheduled news show with its own theme tune updating us on 'TEH WAR ON TERROR!!' In fact the UK gov underhypes them, which then backfires when the tabloids go 'PROOF THAT THE GOVERNMENT SUSPECTED THIS SORT OF THING MIGHT HAPPEN AND DIDNT DO ENOUGH!'

and yes they really could, but most immigrants comng to the UK at the moment are from poland and european countries that have a Legal Right to emmigrate to the uk as part off the European Union

You're correct, we don't have "OMG TEH TERROR" every half hour like some American networks. But what I said was the government makes a mountain out of a mole-hill, which is them amplified by the press. Remember the liquid bombs?

Criticism of the government's 'lack of action' is not a case of back-firing. It actually helps them because it creates public feeling and alters the public mindset, which allows them to give greater funding and ever further reaching powers of authority. The UK police force (or police service, in newspeak) is going through the process of creating new types of units: such as the one that protects VIPs and can detain terrorists under the Mental Health Act, not as criminals, but as the mentally unstable. (If you've studied the evolution of totalitarian governments [Communist, Fascist et. al.], you can see that this is an important step in their development: both in terms of law and dialectics)

These events, promogulated and propagandised in the media help create a climate that is conducive to writing of new legislature enabling the creation of units such as the example mentioned above.

We have a passport system for international travel, a birth certificate and a national insurance number. But we don't posess a personal ID card. Especially one that contains biometic and financial data, and whatever else they will eventually throw on there.
