U.K. Bombings

We used to be constantly disappointed, on the bomb teams, at the consistently rubbish efforts of the ordinary bomber. Many people seem to think that any kind of fire or loud noise will become deadly if you add nails. Your correspondent was once called out to a scene where a teenage cretin, finding that batteries would go pop if heated in a fire, taped nails around D-cells and put them on a camping cooker. Terrifyingly, some of the nails flew as much as two or three feet when this infernal device reaped its deadly harvest.

And what an incident. "It is obvious that if the device had detonated there could have been serious injury or loss of life", Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke intoned gravely.

Ah, if it had detonated. Yes, it could have been a real horror. Only, the device could not have detonated. Not under any circumstances. You see, the terrorist wannabe clown who built it left out a crucial element: an oxidiser. The device was pure pre-teen boy fantasy.

"We'll heat up these propane cylinders with burning petrol, and they'll go off like bombs", boys the world over have remarked with glee. They don't realise that air is a poor oxidiser, and the only "explosion" they will get is when gas pressure inside the cylinders is great enough to burst them. Then the propane will ignite, and a nice fireball will blossom. A fireball, not an explosion.

For accuracy's sake. And for pudding:
So why is this such big news? Because clowns have got to be passed off as terrorists. Because a vast industry depends on terrorists, real and imagined, to justify its existence. We live now in the grip of the security-industrial complex, and that hungry beast demands to be fed. We feed it money hand over fist, and in return, it feeds us fear biscuits, which we are expected to accept with gratitude.

Roll over. Sit up and beg. See the bad man? Good citizen; here's your bickie.

I disagree with some of these statements. A lot of canisters could fragment if they "explode", and kinetic forces applied by the rapid expansion of gases gives the fragments the velocity required to penetrate the human body.Sure, it may NOT be dangerous, but shock may leave people dead. Many parts of the car that arent solidly fixed will be forced off as the rapidly expanding + igniting gases try to find somewhere to go. The resulting forces will violently launch all loose parts at bystanders, injuring them.

Yeah maybe you should listen to the guy who knows what he's talking about. (not me)

Your right though, rapidly expanding gasses are what an explosion is.

Propane doesn't explode, it flashes. There may be a tiny explosion, but not enough to rip do damage outside the car.

And gasoline simply doesn't explosde unless it's under pressure.

It isn't the gasoline, it's the gas it creates.

not sure if it's been mentioned but I believe they linked both recent UK events (the Glasgow Jeep cherokee plot and the leaving parked cars with bombs plot) to two UK muslim doctors.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19544193/

and I think I read something someone said about NBC being real news.... and I lol at that. They're all bias one way (left for most) or the other (the only right one.. Fox)

and Olbermann makes me ill.. as I'm sure ppl get sick watching O'Reilly... I only watch it for it's entertainment value, haha.

/end slight derail

@ Dead-Inside, once again, the bomb as described would NOT cause an explosion with any real destructive force. Go ask a physics professor at your uni if you really don't believe me.

On NPR I heard they were investigating/had linked something like 8 highly skilled doctors (one was a brain surgeon!)

@meotwister ehhh, try watching nbc before you say that. in particular nightly news with brian williams, totally and completely unbiased. dude is amazing

thing is, fox is the only crappy news channel. ill admit they all have biases, but only on fox do they scream, pant, and tell their guests to shutup. i dont care about its right-slant, i do care they are alarmist assholes who dont report the news accurately.

o'reilly is fucking hilarious though :D i like it when he contradicts himself three times in one sentence and then tells his guests to shutup lol

and i dont see how you can hate on olberman, i mean, comeon what other news channel nightly has rediculous videos from teh internetz (oddball), and "newsmakers"? omg, i laugh so hard at the stupid fucking criminals that make it on there

but your in tennessee so it makes sense, your live in a more conservative culture, and i live in a moderately left-of-center city. where all just products of our parents.

My grandma said Fox News reminded her a bit of the Nazi propaganda in WWII here in Germany. Should give you something to think.

I'm not believing this. Either a morale boost to fearfull people or another way to keep the population loyal to the government

god damn it

i wouldn't really care about the little anti-american jokes if you guys didn't actually mean it

don't you guys ever step back and say "hmm, how is it that the americans created the first bose-einstein condensate if their so stupid?" or "why do I feel the need to belittle 300,000,000 million people in one sentence, am i jealous of them?" or maybe just "why am I such an asshole?"

i can take a joke, but so many of you guys actually mean what you say that it really gets me riled up sometimes.

can't we all just get along? let's get together and hate on the french :D

Because of things like 300,000,000 million people  ... na no, no fun to make jokes about French if no French guys are about. And remember please that only because there are many intelligent American people, they would see the point in our jokes, hehe, and perhaps even think we are right

alot of people get there arguments from fox news, and when you tell them that you heard that exact same wording from Bill Oriely (I mean exact too), they deny that they watch fox news. maybe they don't but someone who watches fox news gave them that argument.

I hate fox news, i despise every show/network that thinks that paris hilton is news. People like her are why so many parts of the world hate us...

And as for antiamerican jokes, theyre funny, too a point.
I just find it funny when people say they couldve won both the world wars without us, because nobody can prove that.
Hell, Hitler was close to completely blockading England once wasnt he?

Just think about how the french hate and dont help us along, but when someone invades we msut help them. l/
/end rant.

dont turn this into a flamewar/ww2 discussion

Anyway, i rarely watch TV news now, msn.com has headlines and then when they dont Interlopers does :D
