Looking for a Unreal3 Mapping Community.

Postby Lobstar on Sun Feb 03, 2008 8:48 pm

So i have begun with some mapping in the Unreal3 engine, its soo god damn amazing im crapping my pants.
Ive started to look for a community, much like this one, but concentrated for mapping in the Unreal3 engine.
Is there any? And where.

Also, couldent this site have a separe section for Unreal3 mapping?

Ive also been working in the UT3 editor recently, and so far the only site ive found is the official forums: http://utforums.epicgames.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20 , though they are really just a place to get questions answered and show off maps rather than a place to hang out like interlopers. I think a UT3 section for Interlopers would be nice but i dont think enough people on these boards have interest in the engine for it to take off. Could always try mapcore.net (don't trip over the virus on the front page) - some well established figures in the Unreal modding community like Hourences hang out there.

Yeah Ill second the movement to make a UT3 mapping section cause its a very simple mapping editor as well.

In all fairness, it's as simple or complex as you want it to be. I'd say it's better phrased as an equally competent engine as Source; meaning the toolset is both logical and powerful.

You could try http://www.Mapcore.net , they don't have many or none tutorials about it but there are some talents over there that can tell you all about it :)

Some good UE4 communities I've found

http://www.unrealplayground.com/forums/ ... .php?f=170
http://forums.beyondunreal.com/forumdisplay.php?f=9
http://forums.mapcore.net/
http://utforums.epicgames.com/forumdisplay.php?f=351 (ofcourse)

And here's some video tutorials from Gamtrailer.com. They're hugely informative and there are a ton of them

I think it'd be cool to have an UE3 mapping section. I'd browse through the topics and look at one that looks interesting, not knowing what the hell anyone is talking about, and think to myself, "What a b-UEd-ful world."

If there was support from some select individuals that have knowledge of Unreal editing in general (as well as some UE3 experience) then I could certainly think about a new forum section and possibly some tutorials.

We had a similar discussion about Crysis

Right now I forsee two problems:

  • Not having enough people to write tutorials and guides. The benefit of Interlopers was that I could write things as well. I know nothing about UE3 editing or the general UE3 community.
  • Using a seperate site and sharing the forums, or everything on this site and Interlopers becomes a more general purpose editing site.

What do you think?

I'd love it if Interlopers became a general purpose modding/mapping/modeling site, with different engines to learn etc. As I'd love to learn the UE3 engine, and recently started dabbling in it, but came to a crashing halt when it came to textures, but... if lopers were on hand to help, I might have got further.

It'd be awesome for lopers to develop into a community full of multi-engine modders, looking to learn new engines, programs, techniques and visual styles.

But on the other hand, it would double the work load of the site and admins as the community grows to encompass other engines, and likewise the news page would be busier with more mod and engine news.

But having the site provide tutorials for Source, UE3 and the CryEngine would certainly be cool, and I'd be interested in reading and learning from tutorials, and maybe even writing a couple if I get any good.

I think it's feasible if we have different layouts for every engine. Say, this banner and layout would be for source. for Crysis we would have something jugnly, and for UE3 it would be black and red.

If we just have this layout (and buy this I mean colour, Background image, banners, links) for all enginees it would be confusing :/

I have nothing against a subforum and a tutorial section for UnrealEd, but the site itself (news etc) should remain Source-only, at least IMO.

Some kind of sister site could work though.

I really come to interlopers because it's a half-life 2 site - I mean I think we are fine as we are, making it too big I think'd be bad. I think it's good because everyone knows about source and everyone can help everyone with source.

I think Interlopers is fine as it is. Maybe like a subsection in gaming chat or something, but I don't think anything more.

Here is my serious consideration.

Creating an Unreal (3 only?) sub site to lopers, so something like unreal3.interlopers.net or something.

Use a whole new front site, but literally only change the stylesheet so that the basic layout and navigation remain consistent but the graphics and colour scheme are free to be changed to something different. That way visitors know it's a sister site and don't waste any time learning a new navigation system.

Create a sub section in the current interlopers forum that has it's own self-contained Unreal news forum, tutorials, under construction etc but leave all the general forums and gaming chat as they are so all users share them.

Different forum skins can be applied to sub forums so users moving between the site and forums won't notice a difference.

This isn't actually that hard to achieve, what is hard to achieve is content. Are there some semi-experienced Unreal guys on here that I could recruit to assist in this?

I couldn't give much back except my heartfelt thanks and probably mod rights to the Unreal section to keep stuff flowing. If we plugged away at it the sub site could grow to be quite popular by riding off the back of Interlopers.

What do you guys think?
