USA Political Party Association

Postby Sacul15 on Mon Feb 18, 2008 10:01 pm

If you're not from the USA, or you aren't familiar with the major political parties, here's a brief description (Keep in mind that this is very general and most candidates don't agree with their parties on all issues:

Republicans tend to be more conservative, while Democrats tend to be more liberal.

On the economy:
Republicans are pro-business, Democrats are pro-worker.
Republicans are pro-privatization, Democrats are pro-government programs.
Republicans are pro-self determination, Democrats are pro-helping hand.
Though both parties generally want to improve the environment, Republicans think industry should come first, while Democrats think the environment should.

On international affairs:
Republicans are pro-military, Democrats are pro-social.
Republicans want to get out of Iraq gradually, Democrats want to do so immediately.
Republicans think we should let countries solve their own problems, Democrats think we should give them support.

On rights (this is more conservative/liberal though):
Republicans are pro-life, Democrats are pro-choice.
Republicans are against same-sex marriage, Democrats are for it.
Republicans are against gun regulation laws, Democrats are for them.

Personally, I'm a moderate republican, in that I'm very conservative when it comes to economics and government power, but I'm pro-choice and pro-gay marriage.

I'll move this thread to the serious discussion forum in the event things turn nasty and lock if there is complete flaming (which will probably happen). Keep it civil or I will lock you up and remove your basic human rights without trial just like a republican would.

(Please note this is entirely intended as a joke and is intended to keep this thread lighthearted and from turning into a flame war, and should not be taken as anything but.)

I edited your post slighty because whilst it mostly is fairly even handed (i'm impressed) there was some big wiffy bullshit which needed to be cleaned up.

I however think it is entirely bad form to point blank ask people their political persuasion.

What did you change? I can't find it.

The poll is anonymous isn't it? If people are uncomfortable they don't have to say anything.

The first point: It's not important.

and

The second: It's not important and just expressing my personal views.

Let the thread continue.

Just having two parties... or having to decide to be for one of them is sily imo. you need a mix of things...

I would consider myself a mix of the two. I also agree with many libertarian principles.

Of course not all Democrats want out of Iraq and not all Republicans want to stay. The same is true for every other issue. That's why the lumping together of people into "Parties" is unfair to some. It's just another stereotype; a (sanctioned) way of dividing and conquering the people.

But that's another issue.

I guess I'd call myself an Independent, seeing as how I want (or, would want, because I'm not old enough to vote [!!!!] ) Ron Paul (Republican) as my next president, but am liberal on most social issues. I favor the Democrats because at least they seem to care. However, the Democrats in Congress seem to be too afraid to do anything that might jeopardize their places in office so they, instead of living up to their campaign promises, don't do a god damn thing and hope that no one realizes that they're a bunch of rich, lazy bums. And their strategy works. They don't even have to participate in the decision making process, they don't have to be present. And if they are they don't have to vote. And if they do vote, they can just vote "present" instead of "Yes" or "No" and get away with it. For example, Barack Obama's voting record is filled with either not voting at all or voting as "Present".

Personally, I think we should make Congressmen and women live in the Capitol. I mean it's their job, they should have to be there, they should have to vote one way or another. Why not with cell phones? Special Congressional cell phones? If our representatives don't vote they aren't representing the people who elected them to office. We should fire them.

But that's another issue.

I consider myself a democrat because these days voting for a third party is pointless.

I tihnk communism is the best form of government but only for <100 people at a time.

I am a liberal because I think people have no business nosing in other's private business (social issues) and that greed is wrong/help thy neighbor (economic issues: taxes win everytime).

Someone smart once said that "the problem with giving people freedom is that they'll just vote it away from themselves". I think there are alot of people that shouldn't be allowed to vote.

For example, If you think that gay's shouldn't be allowed to marry because it's against YOUR RELIGION (other reasons are fine), than you shouldn't be allowed to vote since that's unconstitutional. If you think the earth is flat you shouldn't be allowed to vote because your an idiot.

so I guess in that sense I'm a facist.

I'm also a little pudgy.

So I'm a commie liberal facist pig.

I'd consider myself right of moderate but also agreeing with some libertarian principles. But I don't see myself never voting "Democrat" on something.

anti gun control
pro small government (less taxes and all that)
out of Iraq gradually
pro gay civil unions
jury is STILL out on abortion for me.

The fore fathers of the US would agree with you *cough* electoral college *cough*
For example, If you think that gay's shouldn't be allowed to marry because it's against YOUR RELIGION (other reasons are fine), than you shouldn't be allowed to vote since that's unconstitutional. If you think the earth is flat you shouldn't be allowed to vote because your an idiot.

I for one am against gay marriage but for gay civil unions with equal benefits. But even if someone's religion influenced their decision that doesnt mean they can't vote because religion is even a little bit involved in a political process. Thats not what 'separation of church and state' means. If that were the case, the president couldn't even express faith in any religion for fear of that religion affecting a decision.

Though I do agree with the last part... idiots shouldn't vote.

McCain is a dirty fat ass.
I can just tell by his face he's up to no good.
ofcourse not everyone has the same intuition God has, I won't blame you.

I did vote Republican though, I don't like the Democratic candidates for one bit, bunch of sneaks.
I did it for Ron Paul obviously :P

jury is STILL out on abortion for me.

not sure whatever you mean by that but it's a woman's decision and not some 50+ old conservative christian tit. I HATE the fact that this is actually a political subject! You're still living in the '50.

So I'm a commie liberal facist pig.

Ya, and that's good :D

I am so sorry for being unable to express my opinions in a civil manner btw.
This shit always gets me worked up like hell.

Seeing this "(Please note this is entirely intended as a joke and is intended to keep this thread lighthearted and from turning into a flame war, and should not be taken as anything but.)"
also angers me somewhat. I mean come on, if people already start getting nervous over that comment then what the hell.
