Fidel Resigns

Postby sdematt on Wed Feb 20, 2008 2:49 pm

As most of us know, Fidel Castro, the leader of Cuba since 1959, stepped down yesterday. What does everybody think?

I've been to Cuba while he was in power, and it was very good. Has anyone else gone, and what do they think will happen to Cuba?

I've found my stay so far at interlopers quite good, and with a reasonable price.

My Cuban Spanish teacher from last year who was born in Cuba despised Castro, but favored his brother more since he was a lot less totalistic. Oh well, time will tell.

I've been fairly shocked at the way it's been reported here, and I'm sure it's even worse over in the states. They all make him sound like some warmongering totalitarian dictator. Before he kicked the yanks and their genuinely totalitarian dictator/puppet out of Cuba it was effectively the worlds largest brothel. That's why the yanks are so pissed off.

Basically America hates Castro because he did the best thing for his and other countries and then America acted like the playground bully as usual. For once Castro stood up and lamped the bully on the nose, 40 years on you guys are still crying about it.

Upfated sig and avatar ;)

I don't think much will change. I hope the situation gets better in the country (I've been to Cuba) as the embago drops. If it will, of course.

I wouldn't want any of that "democracy" the americans are claiming to spread tbh. Let us just not hope for another Bay of Pigs, but with the states victorious this time.

No offence to any USers. ;)

Woah! When you say America you know your talking about the bureaucrats and not the American people. I hope you understand this and by saying things like
Before he kicked the yanks and their genuinely totalitarian dictator/puppet out of Cuba it was effectively the worlds largest brothel. That's why the yanks are so pissed off.

you are giving me the impression that you hate Americans. I just like to know who you are speaking of when you say "They" and "yanks" and "you guys"?

I don't speak for anyone but myself and have just a tidbit of interest into politics but what would you do if a type of political system against your own was trying to station ICBM's near your country?

Yes, I too am getting a sense that you hate Americans. It's funny you know? People talk about America as if all of its inhabitants believe the exact same values and call us generalizing pigs, how do you think you just sounded Woe Kitten? You just generalized all Americans as Castro haters when I believe a lot like me didn't really care one way or the other. No offense, but I think it's time for idiocy (around the world) to stop.

Yeah ok I should avoid generalisations and it's unfair to probably about a quarter of the American population. But it's just so frustrating watching a country with so much power use that power almost invariably to do harm to the rest of the world. Just once I would like to read a report that said something like 'US takes the lead on climate change' or 'US pushes to cancel African debt' or 'US resists pressure to go to war with X tiny nation that can't defend it's self'.

Your point about the ICBMs shows just how little of the history you know. What would you do if a foreign nation that had been abusing your country for decades staged an invasion against you and then tried to have your leader assassinated? Do you think maybe you might be looking for a little help from a country such as Russia? Incidentally Castro came to the US before going to Russia to try and set up friendly relations but was snubbed.

Also not caring one way another is the problem.

Depends on what the issue is.

Sigh, one of the only genuine people to stand up to their enemies and not let them control him has resigned. We need more people like that.

By the way, I completely agree to all that Woe Kitten is saying.

You mean like the British Empire did from about 1600 to 1997?

Yeah we fucked up during the Bay of Pigs, but it seems like now the Cuban people are starting to demand democracy, or at least some sort of voice. If this is the case, I think the US has the responsibility to help them achieve that goal. Obviously any sort of military action would be wrong, but we could certainly put more political pressure on the current government.
