ISP Mistakes My Game For Piracy

Postby Enraged on Sat Aug 16, 2008 5:33 pm

Over the past few weeks my internet connection has been acting peculiarly. When I say this, I don't just mean the occasional, "Oh it's taking a while to load," or "God dammit I've lost connection (while normally surfing)." Those are happening as much as they ever do.

What I am talking about, is whenever I play DOD:S. Basically, when I join a server, the first 5 or 6 I'll get near immediately disconnected from. It might be a few seconds later, it might be when I'm running down the street or even when I'm facing an enemy. It just stops, and I get a time-out in red at the top right of my screen.

At first I thought nothing of it. Just the internet "warming up" if you know what I mean.

Then, the EFF launched it's new tool, "Switzerland." Basically, for those who don't know, it's a tool which tells you if you're ISP's is throttling any torrentin you may be performing, and according to some reports, is also able to point out when they've invaded you're privacy by looking at the information you are passing.

I was testing it out, just on a few basic websites when I had it running and set it to continuously watch my packet transfers by a batch command. After forgetting to deactive, I tried DOD:S, and what do you know! After checking my logs, it appears as if my ISP is monitoring my connections, and for some reason is attracted to my DOD:S games. I've come to the conclusion that the reason it stops disconnecting me after a few games, is because whoever's sitting behind that desk with whatever (in)appropriate anti piracy firm sign hanging above them, is learning to turn their surveillance equipment off for a while.

Am I being paranoid, or is this really happening?

Might be.

Try playing through an encrypted vpn. They cannot check or trace that, so then nothing you do should trigger the throttling of your traffic. I like SwissVPN, its cheap (5francs a month or so), you can pay with paypal or credit card. That definately will tell you whether its your ISP throttling you...

It's illegal for them to stop you from doing illegal things, even though you aren't. And even more for them to fuck with your non-illegal things. Assuming, of course you don't live in Europe, so if you live in USA sue them.

At least call up you're ISP and complain or something, or better yet, if you want you're ISP to back off file a formal complaint with you're states attorney generals office. Make sure you have the logs to. I'm willing to bet the ISP would be completely surprised and "Have no knowledge this was occurring" and launch a formal investigation. Its simple politics my dear Watson!

Forget complaints. Do things the MAN'S WAY: call in a bomb threat. Then while they're all freaking out, invade their offices with a shotgun and homemade AOL-disk armor. As soon as you bust into the lobby scare everyone on to the ground then line the main entrance with C4 and make sure to reinforce every other entrance into the building. Then go find the office cubical of that ass-hat who sit their on his computer and prevents you from playing DOD:S. From there, just use your imagination but beyond that I really haven't thought out so good luck I guess. I hope your disk armor can stop a bullet.

Just complain, make a big fuss threaten to leave your isp, "They allways cave in at the end"

The only good thing about threatening to leave is they offer you 'compensation' (assuming they're doing what you think) to keep you - so a reduced cost or increased speed. Ask for it if they don't offer.

If you get nothing - look for a new ISP. You might aswell come true on your threat.
