Autodesk Aquires Softimage

Postby RawMeat3000 on Sun Oct 26, 2008 2:38 am

So, it is now Autodesk XSI (or will be soon). Just like with Discreet's 3ds Max, and Alias' Maya, there is no longer any Softimage XSI.

All hail Autodesk.

I'm confused, is this good or bad? And what does it mean for modding?

My gut tells me this is bad, but I really don't know.

Read more about this here:

Some of the Softimage staff share their views on the acquisition.

The general feeling on that thread I linked to seems to be that this deal is going to kill creativity on the part of the developers of XSI. Just knowing your company got bought out must be a real moral killer. Not only that but imagine waking up every day, wondering if your hard work is going to be stolen by a company you owe no allegiance to, and implemented in another, competing application.

I think as modders and modellers this is something that is worth and indepth discussion in our capacity is fairly heavy users.

For that reason i'm moving to the serious discussion forum. Will be interesting to hear people more indepth views.

This is a bit like Adobe where they own Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Illustrator, Photoshop and a variety of other stuff which most 2D designers use and have been bought off Macromedia a few years ago.

Wow I thought Softimage was doing really well, :(
Although, I wonder how Autodesk operates these days, as a holding company, or if they are gonna screw with XSI. Did 3dsmax/maya improve/de-prove(??) when they got bought out?

I wonder if the anti-trust people would be interested in this, they now have a monopoly on 3D Modelling software. This is why I love and hate a free market, we had competition, now we don't. :(

This was my first thought as well, they must surely have up to 90% of the market now.

They say they are gonna keep developing XSI but transfer some of the good elements into other autodesk products.

Sad day indeed

Weird thing is, apparently Autodesk only paid 35 million dollars for XSI which is a lot lower than i expected XSI to be worth.
