When the Left 4 Dead SDK Comes out...

Postby Jerovian on Sat Jan 17, 2009 4:53 pm

Well, I'm wondering what everyone is going to work on when the L4D SDK is released; I personally would like to try making a mod for L4D; and try tweaking the AI_Director (if possible) to test out future mod ideas. Will people even be able to mod L4D? What are your ideas...

I'm not sure what i'll make, but i do know what i'll see when i join servers:

- fullbright maps
- ported maps from other source games
- surf maps
- aim maps, long hallways
- maps with highrisers that'll give smokers instakills
- ...

The day the SDK gets released will be a day i'll love and hate. Not sure which one of the two takes precedence over the other. We'll see.

I've got a plan slowly formulating in my mind for a summer project. Basically a L4D campaign based around my home town and surrounding countryside.

I've got the basic route planned out:

You can check it out in more detail here.

And over the coming weeks (I have two free weeks starting from Monday), I'm going to start on the concept art. I imagine the route will be changed several times before the end, but the basic areas (Charmouth, Golf Course, Outskirts of Lyme Regis, Town Centre, Seafront Finale) will remain basicall the same.

Oh, and I've started on a campaign poster too (From a couple of weeks ago):

True enough, but so far, some pre-SDK maps look pretty good, especially some of those here on 'lopers

Your campaign looks cool hominem, I'm working on a school map right now; it's K-12 so it's quite big, though I'm happy with how it's coming along

I imagine that you'll do justice to the environment, but it'll still be a little weird with American cops running around England, as well as American national guard troops. I hope they let you add in your own zombie models.

Well, in a zombie apocalyptic world, what really makes sense?
lol, but I would like to see custom character models introduced into some campaigns; rather than having that menace behind the door in the church, have a random character(s) you and your team see in some campaign, and they could help out by opening a locked door, or have some random character sacrifice themselves to save you and your team, among other ideas, just to add some flare to the "story" of the campaigns.

Nah.. That would leave the whole "Different gameplay everytime" if a character sacrificed himself evverytime. What could be added instead is some sort of random encounters?

lol for the Church Hominem, you need to make a pope zombie or at the very least some priests and nuns.

Also I'm planning out a L4D campaign, I'm not sure how long it'll take me to finish but I'll be working on it soon, I'm waiting for the official SDK to be released and until then I'll just be texturing and making layouts on paper.

try making a mod for L4D

I paid a visit to the Winchester L4D mod and at one point I read somewhere that they were going to make it onto a mod but they said the source code wasn't going to be release so who knows...

At this time I won't map for it but I thought it would be cool to start off in some sewers and fight your way to the surface.

I've been thinking that some prequel campaigns would be quite cool - say for example a campaign starting at a University showing how Zoey joined up with the others. That would give us some new characters without breaking the ties valve have made between the four original characters.

How would you do that? Start the survivors in two locations? You could only keep them separate for a short time or else you might loose two survivors at once.

I meant that it wouldn't feature Louis, Francis and Bill, but instead have new characters tavelling with zoe, in effect telling the story before she meets the original survivors.

Well that would be an idea, having one player start trapped in a closet (Inside/right next to the safehouse or something) and have the player have to go rescue them, and move on.

But then you could grief by not opening the doors to rescue 'em.
