Developer publication pages.

Postby tasch on Fri Mar 06, 2009 6:59 am

hello,

though this isn't anything worthy of discussion, I had no idea where else I should ask this. I've recently stumbled onto some publication pages by developers and wondering if anyone else knew where I could find more.

For Example.
http://www.valvesoftware.com/publications.html
http://www.bungie.net/Inside/publications.aspx

I find that these are extremely good source material for general design, and for the game development process. I'm personally more interested in the art and design publications then the engineering ones(though I still find them captivating).

If this request turns out to be a dud, I'd still like to here what you guys feel or think about developers providing such resources, and hope that I've been able to provide some materials to suck a couple hours out of your busy schedules. I think I spent about 3 or 4 hours reading over all of those pdf/power point presentations.

Doing a search for the word "SIGGRAPH" or other gaming conventions will usually get you a good number of publications. SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on GRAPHics and Interactive Techniques) is an annual conference on computer graphics. (Several of the publications from valve software are power point presentations for this convention.)

Here is a link to some 2008 papers http://kesen.huang.googlepages.com/sig2008.html
Topics range from animation, to characters, to Computational Photography & Display, Folding & Unfolding Surfaces, Hair and Realistic Rendering, Jiggly Fluids, ect.

NVIDIA has a lot of publications and examples of graphics processing related stuff.

That's about all I know of.

While the SIGGRAPH papers are nice I find they deal with a lot more theoretical and engineering aspects that we might come across later on. They don't have the real world and practical use I was finding with the papers from developers, and lack a lot of the problem/advantage scenarios and design, art sides I'm finding myself more interested in.
