I think that people have got their panties in a twist over this, tbh. There is certainly an inspiration going on (the same essential shape of the platform and overarching bit), but it's such a WIP that it's barely worth mentioning.

Deriving your work from someone else's work and then taking that to a new place is most certainly art and shouldn't be attacked blindly. Obviously, credit must be given where it is due.

Vincent van gogh agrees with me.

^ good one, dragonfliet. this whole thread is crazyness. that WIP shot that was posted looked like it took about an hour to make. it could be transformed into just about anything imaginable in the 3-4 months time it takes to produce a good map (for someone with a day job/life that is, lol)

I think things like copyright and patent law and this kind of paranoia (and other random things like the scholarly obsession with references) comes from an innate and perfectly understandable and even to a degree valuable misunderstanding of the nature of thought. Everything everyone has ever thought was hugely inspired by those that came before. Even the best are like "dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants."

I'd give you a post of the day award like on the f7 lans forums, but sadly Interlopers doesn't have that.

euhm guys just saw the brilliant render, 904 supposed to have copied.
i have to say you can't even start talking about a copy... especially because 904 didn't show his final renderframe yet...

anyways on the subject, there's a difference between stealing, copying and reproducing.

the only one of the 3 that's always wrong, is stealing...

To me, the difference is intention. Just like when telling a lie. You don't even have to say anything to tell a lie, but if you intentionally mislead someone, it's a lie. Conversely, if you tell someone something you thought to be true, it's really not a lie. This is comparable to modeling an architecture style in a part of a level after that of another games levels. You're not trying to steal credit for anything.
