Censored.. "Boobs" racist?

Postby Jangalomph on Thu May 21, 2009 1:55 am

Why are most boobs censored? I saw a whole tribe of boobs on television the other day. Something about a tribe in Africa. So apparently white girls boobs are more offensive than black peoples boobs. Racist anyone? You never see white boobs on travel channel. But black boobs always uncensored..

Feel free to discuss why it's so.

Cultural standards, we do it our way, though we respect their way.

In tribes, not wearing anything up top and therefore showing your boobs are just part of their culture, so it is ok to show them. The "westernised world" has turn the boob from something that feeds a mother's children, to a lusted over sex object that is associated with sex, which is inappropriate for younger audiences. Sex is also still a taboo subject in quite a few places. It is for these reasons that "white boobs" are often censored.

Actually, ANYTHING that can be considered sexual is tabooed in Western Culture. We praise sex as the best thing out there, but at the same time, we consider it a dirty act, too much for anyone under 18 to understand or be allowed to see.

A perverse love of boobs isn't anything new for humanity. http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20090513/sc_livescience/obsessionwithnakedwomendatesback35000years

I always found it funny how western media always censors boobs. It's like they think they are hypnotic or something.

Seriously, we were all breast fed during our young ages (well, a lot of us were) so are boobs REALLY that big of an "uh oh" point?

Nothing to do with racism, it just so happens that it's part of an African tribal culture.

Well, I just don't understand. Maybe it is because I am just not a huge fan of censorship at all. Many other cultures don't censor breasts and they are perfectly normal cultures, so wtf is the point?

Its religion, the catholic church complain about everything, they think they own America, and sadly they pretty much do.

You should know that over fifty percent of Americans are Protestant, while less than twenty-five are Catholic. Unless of course you were referring to the Americas in general.

It's so easy to blame religion, when this is so much bigger than it. Explain why many paintings and statues created during the Church's most powerful period contain much nudity. Just look at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. You don't see bishops and cardinals scrambling to hide the nudity, do you? No, it's just how the dice added up as the culture progressed.

Most tendencies of Christian believe are far worse than the Catholic Church. Mormons and whatever you call them. Although of course, with real believe they have about as much to do as anything I can think up and throw Jesus, God and the Bible in.

Many stuff in Rome was "censored" by a crazy pope. Originally, you could see all of those statures penises. In good old Rome and up until the Middle Age, it was totally normal to show the boobs and penises. Then they got somehow crazy all about it. Brought us the Middle Age and didn't disappear until today.

PS: In German television, boobs aren't censored.

Yet you cannot enter St. Peter's Basilica if you wear:
-shorts/skirts above the knees
-sleeveless shirts
-shirts exposing the navel
-shirts for women that expose cleavage.

Also, let's not forget that the Vatican, at some point in history, covered "inappropriate" body parts of statues, and on paintings, with fig leaves.

Many places in United States allow women to go topless (though not bottomless :( :( :( ) so on the one hand it does suck that our culture in general is so prudish, and that TV doesn't allow it (since TV goes to everyone), but it is kinda nice to let each 'community' decide (even though government works only in theory and in reality it's a bunch of dumb-fuck politicians making up the rules).

On german tv most boobs aren't censored anymore.. So it's probably some USA specific thing (nipplegate wouldn't have caused as much (if any) attention here as it did in the USA atleast  )
