Oh yeah, word of advice, stay away from the southern part of America, not a lot of charming people down here, I'm hoping to move when I get older.
How much have you been in the North? Sure, we have a lot of rednecks and conservative shitbags down here, but on the whole people are much friendlier to each other on the street, on the roads, and in service professions than they are up there. If you try to talk about politics or something you'll probably get frustrated, but southerners are some of the nicest people ever. Especially black southerners. I love living down here despite being the polar opposite of the general Southern political mindset.
I would always recommend someone to move to the US. We have our own huge share of problems, but it's a great country and great people and I love it anyway. If you really want to move out of the UK, consider it. I promise that the overseas cultural/media representation of Americans is misleading (which most Europeans who have visited here will back me up on). All of the European students I've become friends with in their time studying abroad at my university loved their time here. Just don't go to Texas.
I visited Sweden and Norway a few years ago as well, and loved every minute of it. Scandinavia in general is a very laid back place. I'd like to live there someday... I also absolutely love the laws about being able to move freely through other people's property, and camp and forage on it for a limited amount of time as well. The idea that the land belongs to everyone is beautiful and pretty much the exact opposite of the American mentality which is THIS IS MY GODDAMN LAND AND YOU CAN'T COME HERE UNLESS I GIVE YOU PERMISSION.
