MayheM, I don't think it's fair for you to assume that a single parent household puts the child at a "disadvantage" which needs to be "overcome."

You are correct in saying that it affects the child's future, but that goes without saying.

Defining proper parenting is a tricky game that few should bother playing. Firstly, you need to define what the end goal is: a happy child? a moral child? a monetarily successful child? a child that will become a good parent? a polite child?
Then, you need to find out how to steer that child in the proper direction to achieve that goal, but this is a mystery. You can come from a broken home and be a success, you can be a runaway and do the same, and you can live a "perfect" life with Mr. and Mrs. Smith as your parents, and become a screwed up drug addicted sex junky. Or anywhere in between.

As to the OP (which I know was posted quite a while ago) the most disturbing things I found about your story was not the obnoxious children but rather a few things:
1) An employee using a broom to hit the kids out of the area
2) You, and all the bystanders, not calling the cops or taking the proper course of action, and simply laughing. Beating kids with a broom stick for mouthing off and making you wait for a cheeseburger is not "lesson learned."
3) (and this one I find the worst) "When the BLACK manager tells you to gtfo, you gtfo"

Kids being assholes for no reason is pretty meh. But it is your discriminatory assessment of the situation which is the real problem. I should hope these kids would be an equal asshole to a black manager, white manager, French manager, Indian manager, Colombian manager, etc etc etc.
So I showed her. Gave it right to her like I owed her. That's when I turned from Shrek the Ogre into Master Yoda.

cosign Supervillain's post, except for one thing--your statement regarding poor or neglected kids becoming successful, while not untrue (I know a few myself) is definitely the exception rather than the rule, and I'd say socioeconomic background is the defining factor in most kids' lives. Or maybe you didn't mean otherwise? Sorry if I misunderstood.

Well meaning when i say this, in south carolina, generally people of this color that actually give a crap about their job don't play. And its pretty much fact, not discriminatory.

And the thing is, it's not a matter of the color. The manager was only doing the RIGHT thing. The stupid kids need to just get a life you know? Ticks me off when people constantly don't listen. The kids had it coming.

EDIT: And the fact that the manager was about the same age as them. And who cares about discrimination, thats not the point here. Sorry my statement.. "pissed you off" or perhaps didn't. The fact is generally black people don't give two craps. But this one actually did, so they should just gtfo you know? Because i know she would've called the police in a heart beat and i know she has before once they wouldn't listen. :P

Your parents' income level etc. is a stronger predictor of future success in the US than it is in most spots in the EU. We've just got this persistent myth about being the land of opportunity.

Me being of the “offending” generation, I deeply regret that the insufficient brain power (and general idiot-ness) of my metaphorical colleagues has led to such deep stereotyping. While I agree that a significant number of my allegorical colleagues are complete douches I would say that by no means the majority are. I find all of this vaguely funny because while you are speaking of people being douche-bags you yourselves are being semi-douche-bags. All that I ask is that you be a little more open minded and refrain from such massive generalizations.
NBRXXN out.

I think it's fine that this generation is messed up... makes me seem perfect!

Seriously though, first year in high school was super easy... and people were failing. I was making straight A's, and I'm not brilliant. I was called a genius, not because I was super-smart, but because everyone around me was a dumb ass (with the exception of a few people). I don't know if that's good or bad...

Things have changed this year though, classes are super hard and if you're not failing, you're damn close to it. Man I've hated this year.
