If you girlfriend was missing in Haiti right now

Postby RefaelBA on Sat Jan 16, 2010 4:34 pm

The more I watch the news, the worse I feel about this catastrophe. It's a massive disaster, they say that some 200,000 people are dead, that's 1/5 of a million people. Millions are roofless and basically have nothing left.

I met this guy on Chatrt last night and he told me his girlfriend was missing in Haiti. Holy shit. What am I supposed to say to something like that? I mean even if he wasn't telling the truth, can you even imagine what a real person in the same situation is going through? I just hope I'll never have to know.

Yeah, it's horrible. It's got to get worse before it can get better too. All the disease, lack of water and medical care, dead bodies, everything. Luckily there's always people willing to help, troops, churches, volunteers, etc. But yeah, every day the number keeps going up more and more.

I've heard people saying they don't really care, or can't be bothered, which in a sense I understand, but overall to not admit it's really awful is shallow. I mean, that's a ton of people, families, kids, everything. Sure maybe some of their futures weren't much, but there's nothing good about children hospitals collapsing.

Here's to hoping it's a quicker than expected turn around and things can be returned to normal.

They care about this because it's easy to shout out in a few headlines or rather news bulletins. They don't care about the millions of other things going to fuck and back every day because that would actually require explaining, listening and discomfort.

Hey man I live in the Middle East, I know all about it.
But I disagree, because when an earthquake kills some 200000 people in one minute (!!), it's nothing like the crap that people feed each other, it's a colossal disaster.

I don't want to sound harsh, because it's obviously a terrible tragedy and so on but it's not like the planet needs more people...

I was horrified by the images with the streets full of bodies. But I didn't feel sad about it. :|

Such things are terrible, of course and may have more affect to our emotions than the deaths of homeless people during the cold nights of this winter. They seem more terrible than the dozens of civilians dying each day in Afghanistan and Iraq. They seem more terrible than the poor woman in some part of Africa who has her breasts cut off while getting raped by five men.

Because we hear about them. Because we feel obligated to feel bad about it. But honestly, worse will come if the USA and other countries don't intervene. Because gangs will return to the destroyed slums and MANY more people will die.

I feel sad about it, too. It always seems to hit the poorest.

I dunno 'bout you, but I wouldn't wanna rape a woman while her breasts were being cut off. I like them intact, and I like not having blood all over. But then again, I'm not African.

You wouldn't rape at all... I hope.

There was a very subtle attempt at some humor. :-D
