Multiple other sites saying it are out there, I learned of this about 6 days ago. For those of you who have played stalker Its pretty sad news. :|

I hope some one will pick up with stalker to and continue its legacy.

Sequel’s fate in doubt as GSC Gameworld responds to reports of shuttering, saying, “We will do our best to continue.”

The future looks a little bleak for GSC Gameworld, the Ukrainian developer behind the PC postapocalyptic action series S.T.A.L.K.E.R. On Friday, the Russian-language site UkraNews ran a news story reporting that GSC founder and CEO Sergei Grigorovich had decided to close the studio for personal reasons.

NO GOD DAMMIT, NO!

This is sad fucking news indeed. I loved Stalker...so much...I was anticipating a new title from GSC for years now...and now they're closing...

This is a massive let down for a lot of fans.

I hope the guys at 4A games (former gsc employees who left before SoC was released and formed 4A to develop Metro 2033) buy the intellectual property and continue Stalker 2.

Thats what every one else is saying. I really hope they do too. I'm not sure if 4a's engine is capable of the same atmosphere even though they made metro 2033. To me stalker is a pretty hard atmosphere to re-create without x-ray engine.

Huh? You could easily recreate Stalker's atmosphere on 4A's engine. The outdoor areas in Metro 2033 instantly reminded me of Stalker, except...really cold...and way more detailed.

Now...an OPEN world? I doubt 4A's engine supports something like that. Metro was a linear game through and through.

I really do hope they buy the IP as well. That would mean they get the Xray engine along with it, wouldn't it?

@nub: that would be truly epic.

i would like to know more about the cause of the studio's downfall.

I think the Ukraine government stepped in from other articles I read, Some say money issues, others say personal issues. I have no idea. And that's what i'm saying. I don't know if 4a could produce an open world like stalker with the same feeling. X-ray is just the absolute perfect engine for stalker. And its so easily modifiable. Like just yesterday I was coding fire spells to spice the game up a little.

EDIT: and metro 2033 reminded me of stalker only a few times, they're almost un-comparable. The shaders and looks of the outdoors in 2033 just didn't compare to stalkers wonderfulness. IMHO.

I heard about this awhile ago, but sad to hear. I thought that game was selling well on pc side. It's a rough battle though as you can see to find publishers willing to invest in projects. An example Day 1 Studios laying off almost all of its staff.

PC needs to be brought back before consoles completely dominate us all.

All hope isn't lost yet ;)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. dev tweets hopeful message
by Cyril Kowaliski — 10:17 AM on December 23, 2011
Could GSC Game World live on and bring us S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 after all? After the less-than-encouraging news we heard last week, we figured the Ukrainian game development studio was close to shutting down. However, the latest tweet from GSC's official Twitter feed offers some hope:

Dear Stalkers: We will not be releasing any official news until around mid January. However there is cause for hope! Good hunting!
I hope that means S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is still in the works. As we noted last week, the game was supposed to come out some time in 2012 on the PC and consoles—the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game to do so. GSC Game World teased a number of improvements over previous titles in the series, including a new, DirectX 11-infused game engine and stronger survival elements. Nods to survival horror are, in my opinion, what made the first two games great.
