In the US if you meet certain requirements you can run for president. However the reality is that you are throwing your vote away or splitting the vote when you vote for someone other than a Republican or a Democrat. We have had people win from independent parties in the past but that was ages ago. The only person who came close somewhat recently was Ross Perot, but he was insanely rich and he still was third. The Republicans and the Democrats have the money and money = power.
Their first album was better.

There are loads of parties in the US, but most of them are ridiculous. The Green Party, the brown party (I kid you not) the Libertarians, "Independant", etc.,etc., etc. The major attention though focus' on the Democrats and the Republicans because of two things. First and most importantly: they have the most money. Being the established, status quo, it's easy to have money. The television ads, print flyers, etc. cost loads of cash and you can't just do that on your own. Secondly, the democrats and the republican most accurately represent the largest masses of people. Sure, some people are all about the green party, but I'm not. While most people don't agree completely with the two major parites, most people agree predominantly with the two major parties on most of the major issues.

As for me, I vote for the person that's least likely to cause me much financial grief as well who is least likely to start a nuclear holocaust. As it is, the current administration fails on both of those aspects. Come on people, lets get some liberals that want to pay for all of my college education in office ;-)

In England we've had such monstrosities as, the monster raving loony party and one OUTRAGEOUS party named the BNP which intended to clear Britain of all multi-cultrals and anyone not 100% english would be booted out. There would have been no immigrants, no black people, no asian people just 100% british nationals. Its horrificly racist though there is a twisted kind of logic there.

I know that people are sayign that the Liberals are a terrible government, but when you think about it, any party that gets elected is going to either have skeletons in their closet or shit on their shoes.

Although I do believe that the Liberals may not be good for the job, considering the amount of scandals and dirty money being thrown around, but if Harper wins, we're all fucked. :?

NDP hs a very small chance of winning, they're a small party with very little money, even though they've probably got the cleanest slate, but they barely ever get elected, which may explain why.

The Bloc Quebecois will never win. Period. Last time they won, they wanted to seperate from Canada. Although remember that it wasn't necessarily a "close vote" when nno-seperation won 51%-49%, because the separists would have needed to have 75% to seperate.

Plus, like someone else said, (excluding the ignorant cunts) there are many other real parties, but they really don't get much attention or even get into the election. I mean, we've got a marjuana party (I think), plus a lot more that I've never even heard of, because of why I just explained :)

So really, IMO I think it's going to come down to Liberals vs. Conservatives... again.

IMO we'll just need to wait for another 15 years so the old stupid population starts getting old, then the new generation of more intelligent and progressive people gets adult. We still have that massive part of the population that is kinda old and getting older, thinking young ppl are only making trouble so they're voting Conserv. because they have "teh" solution. If you saw Harper's TV ads, you'll understand.

Our generation (15 - 25) is way more informed and concerned about the real and actual problems, but some of us can't vote for now and we still are fewer than the old Conservs. I just cant wait for all this to change.

I think Canada would work better all separated, maybe just keep an alliance for the northern provinces since they cost money more they make some. Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and BC have way enough money and power to stand on their own and manage their own stuff. Quebecois and English canadians are different, yes, but english canadians are different among themselves, making us all very different. BC problems and Alberta's problems arent the same and ontario's as well. the federal gov is eating all our money for stupid thing while the provinces could handle themselves their own management.

I've nothing agaisnt the other provinces, but I think it would be better for everyone to have their own private management, not having a federal time and money wasting shit telling us what to do.

Obama isn't going to win. America as a whole isn't ready for a black, Muslim president. I think the GOP will win this one, simply because the Democrats are too divided.

Holy crap, I hope you had to look all those up. That would be pretty scary if you knew all of them by heart.
Oh well, I guess it doesn't really matter. No matter who we elect, he/she will never fulfill his/her goals and the American people will be bitching again within a few months.

I don't think we will have a GOP president next, in the most recent poll I heard 80% of those surveyed would vote for a "generic democratic candidate" but like you said, I don't think most people are ready for a black president, especially since obama is a little shaky on actual issues. same with clinton. the same poll also asked about obama vs. generic republican and clinton vs. generic republican, and the generic republican won both times!

oh, and I know 6 of the democratic candidates and three of the republican ones, others came from the magic of wikipedia :D anyone else watch the debate last night?

p.s. oops for changing the topic from canadian to us american
