What do you have against Games? I play games. More than 50% of the worlds population probably play games. When you talk about voilent games, they have age ratings. I think, most films, that are at 18 and horror are usually way way more voilence than most 18 games. So, just let people play them please. I know that one person won't change your mind but...

The problem with Jack Thompson is that it's virtually impossible to have a serious discussion about him, because nobody wants to agree with what he says. I think he's right that children should be kept away from certain computer games. Parents aren't doing a good enough job of parenting and controlling what their (especially younger) children. I believe that there is a genuine problem with society there, and it shouln't be up to the state to restrict certain things like violence, drugs, porn and so on from younger members of society..

But when he crusades against a game that already features drugs, guns, killing, fighting policemen and so on and so forth because it's possible to hack them and show simulated sex between two low res, low poly, fully clothed people, it gets silly. The fact that you need to access the internet to do this makes it particularly ironic. Like that's the worst thing you'll find on the internet.

I'd love to know what he makes of your average round of Counter Strike...

Yup, the Religious Right is verrrrrrrry adept at twisting religion and religious teachings into weaponry. Gaming is, in dear ol' jack's mind, masturbation - aimless personal pleasure. Which, of course, is a heinous sin.

People like Jack Thomson are the reason why separation of state and church is so important. Any americans here, for your own sakes and the rest of us, please uphold that crucial constitutional cornerstone to the last and don't let it be chipped away. Not just for the sake of games and gaming, but for the sake of intellectual maturity (eg preaching genesis - i mean, 'teaching intelligent design' - in schools) and for international harmony (how many times has Bush referred to iraq/war-on-terror as a crusade?)
